About Deep Ellum Dallas

Deep Ellum is an arts, music and nightlife area next to downtown dallas, separated by I-45. The name is derived from "deep elm street" where a collection of bars and restaurants sit. The area has had its bad times in the past but is seeing a resurgence in activity and outside investment. The streets Pacific, Elm, Main, Commerce, and Canton tie Deep Ellum to downtown dallas.

The neighborhood started in the late 1800's as an industrial hub, but got it's knack for music in the early 1930's. Back then Deep Ellum was one of the hottest spots in the south for Jazz musicians to play in the American south. In the Vietnam era the area was largely converted back into industrial usage becoming a warehouse district. The open spaces began to attract artist and by the 1980's the neighborhood was coming back to it's musical heritage with live music clubs playing host to mostly punk bands. The 80's music life would thrive and boom into the 1990's. One of the longest running night clubs in the district "Clearview" finally closed its doors in 2006, a sign that the neighborhood was changing once again.

Today Deep Ellum is home to an assortment of luxury apartments, condos and lofts along with tattoo shops, restaurants and nightclubs. The district plays home to many annual arts festivals including the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. Life in Deep Ellum is vibrant and lively as always.
