Deep Fried Ice Cream Recipe - Sounds crazy? Well, It isn't so crazy. When I first saw this dish in the dessert section in a restaurant, I thought I was day dreaming. Ice Cream and that too Deep Fried.

I have a penchant for trying crazy food items and hence I ordered and to my surprise I really liked it. Its something that may not suit the palate of everyone - but I'm sure that there are enough takers for Deep Fried Ice Cream.

Well, Deep Fried Ice Cream is just that. Ice Cream that has been deep fried.

Generally these are small balls of ice cream which are frozen at a very low temperature and then rolled in a batter or either eggs, cornflakes or tempura and then deep fried.The coating generally acts as an insulating agent and the ice cream does not melt inside.

When you eat the Fried Ice Cream, you are welcomed to a beautiful contrasting taste of the crunchy crust followed by a delicious ice cream. It's like having an eclair with the difference in temperatures.

Its an experience that is difficult to explain and must be experienced to be truly savoured.

If you have eaten the Deep Fried Ice Cream, you would have come across several versions. The most popular versions are the Mexican and the Asian (Chinese/Japanese).

In fact I had my first taste of Fried Ice Cream in a Chinese Restaurant in Mumbai.

But the roots of the dish are being traced back to North America - to the "Baked Alaska" in particular.

Delicious Deep Fried Ice Cream

A Featured Recipe

Ingredients
- 4-5 scoops of your favourite Ice Cream. I prefer Vanilla
- 1/2 Cup cornflake -crushed fine
- 1 tsp Cinnamon powder
- 2 tsp Sugar
- 3 egg whites

For the toppings
- Whipped Cream
- Chocolate Sauce

Method

1. Prepare nice round scoops of the ice cream and place it in the freezer (preferably overnight)

2. Mix the cornflakes, cinnamon and sugar together

3. Roll the ice cream scoops till them are completely covered and refreeze for a couple of hours. They should look somewhat like the ones in the picture below.

4. Meanwhile, beat the egg white till they are stiff
5. Roll the ice cream scoops in the egg batter and the rest of the cornflakes mixture and it is time to refreeze one more time. After this the cornflakes mixtures should cover the scoops much better and completely as seen below.

6. When you are ready to fry - Heat enough oil in a wok or Kadhai (not too hot) and fry the Ice Cream Scoops until they are slightly golden
7. Place it in your plate and top it with some chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
8. Serve Immediately

How Popular is the Deep Fried Ice Cream

While I have seen many people enjoy this dessert, several of my friends have refused to even try it. Perhaps the name sounds repulsive.

I tried deep fried bacon and didn't like it, and this doesn't appeal to me too much either - and actually the deep fried twinkie doesn't either cuz I didn't like the bacon, but I might try deep fried pop - saw that at the fair the other day.
