I think I understand RSS now, but notice you don't list feedburner - is there a reason for that? I'm wondering, because Feedburner seems to be the rss that is most often recommended.

I agree with SereneSea, if you don't really know anything about RSS or html sometimes this all seems a bit too much. Examples are always helpful for all of us who know very little.
  • SereneSea Oct 31, 2010 @ 12:27 am | delete
    Hi thefluffanutta,
Helps if you elaborate more on how to use RSS feed by an example. I still find it hard to understand how to use it though I understand the basic concepts. Also, do the backlinks get added when you squidcast , I am using your tool for getting the backlinks on my lenses.

I am using an automated tool to submit the rss feed of several of my lenses to multiple RSS submission sites. But I am yet to see any of these RSS feeds show up as backlinks either on squidutils backlink checker or through Yahoo Site Explorer. Am i missing something here? Is there a way to view how many such links have been indexed by Google or other search engines

Hi Fluff, I spotted a number of those RSS sites that seem dead here.
daytimenews.com now requires a password to even view the portal - probably dead, feebees.com, feedbomb.com gave 404's. Feedboy.com times out. rssmad.com - expired DNS.
The other links were handy though. Those tracking icons for feedcat.net - is there any good way to get those onto Squidoo lenses?
  • Obscure_Treasures Mar 10, 2010 @ 5:09 am | delete
Found some extremely valuable tips here. I am sure all new lensmasters will find great use of this lens.
  • rtyndall Dec 13, 2009 @ 10:18 am | delete
You keep saying that RSS is a good way to get back links and content. However, I don't understand how. Search engines can't read rss feeds. If you view the text version of your cached page, you will not see anything for your rss feed. And that is what search engines will see. Nothing.
So tell me what I am missing.
  • thefluffanutta Dec 13, 2009 @ 4:32 pm | delete
While the search engines can't see the RSS feeds on your Squidoo lens, they can read the content when you submit your feed to any of the syndication services listed on this page.
  • Morten Hinrichs Dec 11, 2009 @ 4:29 am | delete
I have just start a Rss Feed Directory http://www.feed4me.com - here can you also get free deep links (Dofollow)
  • jsr54 Dec 7, 2009 @ 10:29 am | delete
You would think that Squidoo pages would be a good place to add your RSS feed, but apparently they use Ajax or some other technology for the RSS feeds that keeps them from getting cached, and so don't create any backlinks for other sites that you post on your lenses.
  • thefluffanutta Dec 7, 2009 @ 11:19 am | delete
This is indeed true, which is why Squidoo isn't listed on this page. There are plenty of other platforms that are good for RSS feeds though.

  • Kate-Phizackerley Aug 25, 2009 @ 10:05 am | delete
Most of these sites don't have visible links to your site. Some down on deep pages, but there pages have no Google page rank. In SEO terms I am dubious whether these sites have any value. If you have a site that people may click through to, it could be a way of getting found ... but only a certain profile of readers uses sites like this.

if you submit your Lensmaster feed (or latest hubs), then any new lenses (hubs) you create will automatically appear.
  • JackieLee Dec 2, 2008 @ 12:49 pm | delete
When you submit an rss feed ~ say from hubpages or squidoo ~ to the syndication services, or the aggregators do you need to do them again when you do another lens or hubpage? Or is it just done because you put the RSS feed in and it will update automatically?

Thanks for all you do, you are greatly appreciated!!

You should put your Lensmaster profile page as your 'homepage', i.e. http://www.squidoo.com/lensmasters/LMP for yours - that page links to your feed anwyay.

You can also submit your individual lens feeds for syndication as well, though if you have a lot of lenses it is easier to do just your main Lensmaster feed. You can find the lens feed in the side bar of your lens, or as an orange icon near your browser's address bar.
  • EuroSquid Oct 25, 2008 @ 7:39 am | delete
I have a question about RSS Feeds. If I go to an Aggregator Service such as Daytimenews.com I am asked for URL of RSS feed. At Squidutils, I can find the feed for ALL of my lenses, which in my case is http://www.squidoo.com/xml/syndicate_lensmaster/LMP . But usually I am ALSO asked for "Your website's homepage URL". What should I enter? Squidoo.com? The URL of one of my (many) lenses?

Or would it be better to put in the RSS Feed and URL for each lens individually. Then I would need to have the RSS for an individual lens and that is not given in Squidutils.

If it is only me with this confusion, please send me a quick note. Otherwise, you might want to add a module on this topic.

This is really good information. Thank you for sharing.
So many people are unfamiliar with using the RSS feed to get traffic to their sites and your lens certainly enlightens.

Thank you! I was so excited to get my RSS on my blog -- now all these new ideas! yeah!
  • dannystaple Jul 9, 2008 @ 2:11 am | delete
Thanks for this - a great way to get the word out. It looks like feedbomb is not currently working - broken php scripts. It is probably worth getting registeres with most of these sites, even if you only get a trickle of visits from them, it is a trickle you did not have before and it all adds up..

I have heard from many, how important RSS feeds and Backlinks are. I still have no idea what they are or how to do it, but I will definitely study your other lenses and learn. I learned so much from this lens about where to get started and how important these feeds really are for traffic building. This lens was very helpful and educational.

    Thank You,

Great lens, I've come back to this one for reference many times, not just for squidoo but also for my blog rss feeds.

Also, to xtnshun, I've tried Zimbio, it's good, got some visitors and back links. It doesn't auto update your rss tho, you have to okay the articles you want to republish there manually.

  • lissie Mar 29, 2008 @ 3:30 am | delete
Hubpages will give you a nofollow tag if your hubber score is less than 75 - so you need to do a few decent hubs to keep it above this
  • xtnshun Mar 28, 2008 @ 11:20 am | delete
    Any views on zimbio.com?

Useful lens on RSS feeds. But I think I still need to analyze and understand it clearly. Still not sure whether
RSS feed would be effective with RSS directories submission.
  • alkenmrs Jan 24, 2008 @ 4:47 pm | delete
Great information on RSS Feeds. There is a program out there called RSS Submit which submits to RSS directories and the like. However, can't find anybody who is using it. Would just like to know if it works or not as the case maybe or even if it is worth buying.
  • hmsweaver Dec 31, 2007 @ 8:41 am | delete
Fluffa, you're so smart. :-) I've also used Carp to display feeds on some of my sites. Somebody already mentioned it, but it's worth a look if you've never seen it.
  • JasonHulott Dec 18, 2007 @ 7:59 am | delete
Great Lens. One thing you could add in is to tell readers about CaRP. This is a fantastic tool to do all kinds of great things with displaying RSS Feeds.

I have a question about duplicate content and RSS. I have seen blogs where webmasters have been encouraged to syndicate a Feedburner.com RSS as their alternate content so people will subscribe to this. Should I leave my RSS at http://www.demonzmedia.com/Rss/Demonz.ashx OR syndicate it elsewhere?
  • adez7 Dec 4, 2007 @ 4:43 pm | delete
    Hi Fluff,

Great article! I'm glad to see Daytimenews.com has been added. Another point to mention: Daytimenews.com actually spiders the URLs in the RSS items to build the keywords, descriptions, and titles of the pages in our directory. This is one way to insure that user get the deep links they are seeking
