Why Deer Hunting is Important

If you live in a rural or small town, you know that deer hunting season is an important part of your local ecology. It is vital that the herd is reduced, and reduced in a regulated and humane fashion. The deer hunters in our local area are very kind to the deer population, which has grown to the point of starvation and needless suffering. They are a very populated species, and as such, winter brings an increase of starvation and death for the herd.

If humans can use this reason to hunt and thin the herd, they have done so for good reason. During the mating season, it is not unusual to almost or hit a deer with your car. They often move during hours of traffic, morning and evening, and during the fall and early winter in abundance. It is very important for many reasons that we safely and humanely deal with our deer population, as predation has been almost eradicated from the local area. If the wolf population was active, there would not be a need for such important hunting initiatives, but that is just not a possibility.

If you live in a urban area, or in another part of the world, this can be a great experience for you. Deer are a real problem in most parts of North America, and here is their modern story!

A Deer will Hit Your Car

Car Deer Road HuntingIf you are traveling in outlying areas, you are going to experience, deer along the side of the road. They are just there, grazing, and looking at the traffic sometimes. It is an amazing thing for foreign travelers, as they do not have large animals remaining in much of europe or asia, due to large human populations, and mass hunting extinction. In North America, many animals that were naturally keeping the ecological footprint of deer at a safe and manageable level, are themselves rare. Wolves in the northern hemisphere are often times very much rare, and can not keep up with the population of deer that have grown out of control.

This problem led to a regulated hunting and trapping program in the United States, that allows so many head to be killed with a permit, and within certain rules. The Regulations are with each territory or state, and each hunter must follow these rules or there will be strict consequences. The hunters in our state have a series of rules that protect the deer population from over culling, and protect the natural population of other animals in the area. Each animal has its own season, and the hunters are very good about following the rules, and if they do not, they are often fined or imprisoned for their actions.

Deer hunting is serious business, creating many jobs and income for local businesses and merchants in the travel path for hunters. Provisions, materials, and weapons are very much important parts of the hunt, as well as licenses and tags that the hunter must purchase. The end reward is a culled deer herd, and a very nutritious food source for many local hunters and their families.

Deer are Very Busy in Fall

It is mating season!

pointed buck deerMany times you will see more activity from deer, as they run along side the road, in the Fall and early winter. They have made best use of all the easy pickings with vegetation and summer's bounty. Now, they are looking to follow through with their natural reproductive urges, and it is a busy migration for the herd.

The males find themselves in a battle for the females, and the females are often running back to their birth place to settle in for a winter's rest. The entire end of the season of summer causes a lot of activity, and that is why the deer season is at the same time of year. In the midwest in the United States, it is not uncommon for a herd to be above 30 or 40 percent more than it was in the spring. The increase in population will cause starvation, and this will be harsh for the winter herd.

The best and most sought after deer hunt is a buck, with his points and antlers. Many hunters are happy with this result, as it is not as easy to track and shoot a pointed buck. The department of natural resources has a limit placed on the hunters for how many bucks and doe deer they can kill. It is important that they follow the rules, as their are strict penalties for unlawful practices.

Many hunters consider the hunt a sacred and important rite of passage in their lives. The ritual of the hunt is passed down in the family, and the meat is consumed by the family, and they have a great reverence for the deer. There are those who do not respect this thought, but most are gentle people, who feel the honor of the hunt is important, and take this responsibility very seriously.

Deer during the Holidays

Watch for them in Snow!

Christmas DeerDuring the snowy season of winter, you can find deer sometimes at your backyard bird feeder, eating away. The snow can get very deep, and it can be very hard for them to find food. That is why it is so important that the herd is culled, and that people are allowed to hunt. The best gift you can give a sportsman, is time to get away and go hunting.

Sometimes life gets very busy and hectic, and we do get tied to our work and family obligations. But just as important as family, is protecting our natural resources, and that includes deer. If you can do it, be sure to plan a deer hunting trip during the holiday season, at a local game park or a respective wildlife preserve. You are not only feeding the deer better during the winter, as these preserves and parks attract deer populations for legal hunts outside of the season, but you are being kind to the deer that are remaining in the wild, by helping to give them a better chance at survival.

Be sure to check with your local sportsman's club, shooting range or local Department of Natural Resources office for outside season time to hunt deer. The deer in the wild need your support to keep their numbers down. Many of the natural predators in the wild are lacking in numbers, and can not control the growth of this abundant creature.

In Europe, the deer population is almost gone. This is due to over hunting, and the mass of people killing them for food. The collapse of the deer population has ensured death to countless other animals. The best gift to a sportsmen and their deer, is to allow the right to hunt deer, and to keep the population at safe and good levels for your local ecology.
