Deer repellent keeps your foliage safe

Deer repellent is very important to stop trees from being destroyed. Browsing hungry deer can damage the landscape each winter. The damage they cause is permanent and often very expensive to repair. There are various different methods to keep deer and other animals from damaging foliage, all have their pluses and minuses.

The options

There are various options for deer repellent:
DeerPro
This lasts a long time, and it does not need to be reapplied in the snow and ice. It provides up to 6 months of protections. The active ingredient is thiram, which acts as a strong taste deterrent. DeerPro is used in a spray form, and is sold as a concentrate which just needs water added to it. The deer repellent DeerPro comes with a coloring so that it does not show up when sprayed on trees. It was developed over 25 years ago at Redding Nursery in Redding, Conneticut.

Water sprayers
These are motion activated and work by spraying water when a motion is detected nearby. The deer will quickly identify this as an unpleasant experience and stay away from the source, so the sprayer should not need to run for too long. It uses infra red sprayers which work in the night or the day

Electronic and ultrasonic controllers
These work as deer repellents by producing loud sounds which animals tend to find irritating and so stay away. Either human audible or only animal audible devices can be purchased, the human aubile variety sound travels much better around obstacles while the animal only audible one requires a clutter free environment to work properly.

Netting
Netting can be used to stop the deer from getting to the foliage area and thus stopping trees from getting damaged. It can either be made as part of a fence with polls or it can be place over fragile trees. The disadvantage to this is that it can be unsightly.
