Top Deer Hunting Tips & Tricks for Hunting Big Whitetail Deer

While most hunters will admit a small amount of luck will play into any hunting success, implement these tricks and tips and you will start removing luck, and replacing it with preparation and predetermined success!
  • Goals It is important for you to first determine what your deer hunting goals are before you start scouting, planning and preparing for your next deer hunting season. Decide what type of deer hunter you are or want to be. (Are you going to be adamant about consistently harvesting trophy buck and will not settle for anything less or will you be happy to bag a deer and put meat in the freezer) This will greatly impact the scouting and planning you will have to do for your next deer season.

Tips and Tricks ~ Decide right now what type of hunter you want to be. If you decide to be a serious whitetail deer hunter I would suggest learning everything you can about whitetail deer. Read books, spend time in the woods, talk to other hunters, practice shooting your gun or bow and most importantly have fun and enjoy nature.

  • Scouting - Many hunters know that scouting an area is an important key to success. However, too many times, hunters will spook a big buck out of an area and not even know it. This is one of the most important aspect of deer hunting. If you are after big whitetails it is critical that you are able to do the proper scouting in a way that wont spook the deer out of the area.

Tips and Tricks ~ Large Whitetail deer don't travel on the same trails as the doe and small young buck. They meander between bedding and feeding areas. Understanding how and where deer move around your hunting area will play a big part on where you place your stands and blinds.

Tips and tricks ~ Pay attention to deer behavior during different weather patterns. Deer can sense when a storm is coming and will deviate from normal feeding patterns to fill up before the storm so they can find a safe place to wait out the storm. After the storm they will be hungry again and will be looking for food. If you've done your homework you will know where the feeding areas are and can plan a successful hunting trip around a storm.

Tips and Tricks ~ When deciding if a trophy whitetail is in your area look for large tracks that sink deep in the mud or snow. This indicates a large heavy deer. Look for antler sheds. Pay attention to old rubs. deer with big racks have the ability to rub larger trees. Look for branches that overhang a scrape. Deer will break these branches off as they rub their forhead scent glands on the branches. The mature dominant buck use this to announce their presence.

  • Planning and Preparation ~ Start scouting early. Get a notebook and keep records of everything you see. It can also be helpful to have a topographical map or you can draw your own in your notebook. Pay attention to feeding areas (nut and apple trees, corn fields,) Note deer trails of both doe and large buck, bedding areas, creeks, weather, old buck rubs, where sheds are found and if you see deer while scouting note when where and what time. The more information you have the better you will be able to plan and prepare your hunting season.

Tips and Tricks ~ Whitetail deer love the nuts from white oak.

Tips and Tricks ~ Once you start understanding the deer in your area use the information to strategically place your stands and blinds, plan the best way to enter the woods without alerting the deer.

Treestand Tactics - Deer Hunting Tips and Tricks

Like most, you probably have a favorite deer stand or location that you can not bring yourself to venture too far from. When you feel comfortable in one spot it's hard not to go to that spot everyday you hunt. This type of treestand tactic can, however, seriously limit your hunting options.

Sticking in one place too long will leave a stronger scent in the area, and will only further hamper your efforts of getting that big time Whitetail. For the best results, you should have multiple stands and/or blinds strategically set up around your hunting area. This should all be part of your planning process. If you have done your scouting and kept notes on feeding and bedding areas and have an understanding of how the deer move in your hunting area you will have a good idea of where to place your stands.

Depending on the area you are hunting I would suggest 2 to 4 stand/blind locations. Place 2 lower on the hill and 2 near the top of the hill to take advantage of the thermal column. ( as the day warms up the thermal column will carry your scent toward the top of the hill) Also place stands on each side of the property to take advantage of wind direction.

Everything changes during the rut. You may find it necessary to move a stand to take advantage of an active scrape. As the bucks are on the move, you should also be on the move changing your location as necessary. For this it would be advantageous to use portable ladder stands or have an extra climber available to use.

Multiple stands also gives you the opportunity for more information on patterns and other deer movements and activities through hunting season. Use this information as a start to the next years hunting plans. Doing this year after year will only make you more successful each year you hunt.

Tips and Tricks ~ It will be to your advantage to have more than one stand or blind. Some areas may be better in the morning and some in the evening and you may need to plan your days hunt around the wind direction. Move around, change directions, and make sure you have enough stand locations in place before the season starts for your best success.
