Defeating Depression In America

I hope this lens will benefit at least a few of you who see it. I will work at adding better content and better links daily. If you know some good sites let me know please.

I think the U.S. needs to spend more time researching how to Defeat Depression. They also need to look into Health Care for the poor. It's almost a non-thing in this country.

Did you know that as many as 60,000,000 Americans may suffer from Depression and Depression related Illness. Think of how much that cost's You and all of America! Hundreds of Millions of dollars each year!

If 20% of America was HIV positive would you be scared? If 60,000,000 Americans had Cancer would you be worried? If 20% of our population had any other disease or medical condition America would take notice and demand something be done. Right?

So why does America ignore Depression and Mental Illness?

Why is there so much physical abuse in this country? Why are there so many men in jail for abusing their girlfriends? Why are there so many Adults in jail for Child abuse?

Do you think there are that many bad people out there? I mean there beating and abusing another human being they have to be bad right?

I don't think so I think it's Plain and Simple, Extreme Anger and Violent mood swings can be directly linked to Depression.

When children are submitted to a life of abuse growing up, how do they deal with it? A whole lot of ways and most are not good. They grow up with repressed feelings of anger and resentment. Self Esteem is low, if there is any at all. They feel like they don't matter and that no one cares or understands.

The Teen years are some of the most dangerous years of all. All the emotions of their early years of abuse and the coming of young adulthood and the hormonal changes that take place are the breeding ground for Severe and Life long Depression

Happy Humans do not feel the need to fog their world up with Drugs of any kind. They fog up their lives because they are empty inside and they are trying to remember what if feels like to have a soul. But it's just a fog of death a slow Decline of the Spirit a Blackening of the Soul and a Melt Down of the Mind.

This is not how I think it may be to feel this way, It Is the way I felt and Lived for more than 30 years with Depression. It is something that should scare the Hell out of every American! What I described is just the way I felt every one is different.

How do you think actor Owen Wilson was feeling the day he tried to take his life. Here is a man you would think is happy, right? Great actor, good looking guy has all the beautiful women he could want and money to burn. So what's the problem? He probably has no clue as to why he feels they way he does.

He just knows that no matter how he tried to keep the thoughts out of his head they would always come back. That is a terrible way to live and he probably just got tired of feeling that way day in and day out. Then the thoughts come and the come fast and furiously-

"it's no use anymore", "it would be so much easier to end it now", "it wouldn't hurt any more","they would all be better off with out me" and there's a thousand thousand different thoughts that can go through your head. None are good and they all arrive at the same Deadly Place "DEATH".

Think of all the people you know that have some kind of pain they live with daily like, back pains and strains, bad knees, arthritis, bad teeth,or any other type of pain you can think of.

. Do you have some kind of pain you live with? How does it make you feel when you get up in the morning or how does it affect your day or the way you interact with other people? How does it affect you in the long run? Do you feel like your at your whits end?

This is one way Depression gets ahold of you and it has such a very soft touch and it's not interested in your age, sex, color, race or anything but your Mind and your Soul.

We need to face this Killer and make it the goal of all Americans to Defeat Depression within the next 20 years! If you do nothing more than tell some one about Depression and what it's doing to our Country, You will be doing a Lot to help Educate and Knowledge is Power

I truly hope that your life is never touched by Depression and it's terrible effects ,but there are so many lives that are being destroyed every day PLEASE at least get the word out put up my web address on a bulletin board or put a little sign in your car window for just a month or even just a week would help.

When you go to your Dr.s appointment leave a few strips pf paper with the link to my site written on it laying around.

Educate your self about depression and you might find out it was a life saving decision.

Depression is more dangerous than any Terrorist, it's more deadly than the Avian Flu, it Kills more Americans every year than H.I.V. and Heart Disease together. If America continues to ignore this Killer, then we can look forward to a decline that will make Rome look like a Happy ending.

Defeating Depression in America Should be a Main concern of Us All. We all need to Understand the problem and understand that it costs the the U.S. Hundreds of Millions of Dollars Each year! If you don't understand the problem how can you fix it?

Depression and Perscription Drugs

Depression and the Prescription Drug Problem in America

Depression and Drug's go hand in hand.

Would a happy and well adjusted person stick a needle full of heroin in a vein and push the plunger? I don't think so.

Would a happy well adjusted person smoke a pipe full of meth? I don't think so.

Would a happy well adjusted person pop a hand full of pills to get high? I don't think so.

I also think that prescription pills are way to easy to get, I know that first hand. I also think that Alcoholism should be considered a drug addiction.

As long as there are so many Americans living at or below poverty level you can expect a large drug problem.

There are far to many Americans living a paycheck to paycheck life style, and that leads to major problems with Depression which leads to major problems with Drugs.

It is far to easy for anyone to get a prescription for Codine or for any drug that a person wants to get. It is chaning but I don't know if it's for the better or not. A lot of doctors have done an about face and now they won't prescribe any pain reliver's at all! Because of the freewheeling way they were prescribing pain killers in the past, now they won't give them at all! That to me is punising the many because of the few. It sure isn't the fault of the normal everyday guy that the doctors over prescribed and their malpractice insurance went up.

As with every thing else in this country it's one extreme or the other and in the end it's the average joe that pay's the cost's one way or the other.

Squidoo as Depression therapy

I came to squidoo to build and flip and stayed because I like the Therapeudic feeling

Hi-My name is Chris , I am 47, single and have lived and suffered with Depression for more than 35 years.
I had heard of squidoo but really didn't pay much attention to it until I found an e-book about how to build and flip a lens. i.e selling it.

So I decided to give it a shot, it has gone very quickly from being a money making opp. to being a way for me to express myself and maybe help others that go through the same life draining experiences I have gone through.

I don't want to sound to negative but, Depression is to me a greater danger than STD's,Meth,Heart Disease,AIDS and any other disease you can add combined. Do you know of any other disease that could affect nearly 25% of the country's population?

What about other country's where they don't have the quality of life that we have in the U.S. What do you think the percentages are like in Iraq or any third world country? That's the thing about Depression, where some disease's are picky and only choose a certian very unlucky group, Depression does not give a damn about age, sex, race or color or anything. Depression is a sociopath and it will destroy anyone it can get a grip on.

The best way to Start Defeating Depression in America is to try and educate people so they don't see Depression or any Mental Health Issue as a social stigma. It blow's me away that we turn our heads away from a disease that is so potentialy deadly to America. If we reacted to Depression the way we reacted to 9-11, Depression would be slated for extinctioin within the next 30 years!

People need to remember that the body is nothing more than the machine that keeps the mind alive, gives it the things it needs to function, everything that we are, all of the things that make each of us the special and distinct individuals that we are, resides in our brain, if we ignore the health of our brain what good is a healthy body?

Don't be ashamed of having a Mental Health problem, those who need to be ashamed are those responsible for the Health Care needs in this country. I have to laugh at all of these "new" health care plans they are showing on T.V. saying now "all americans can can have a health care plan" Yeah! if they can afford it. A great % of the Mental Health care problems are Low Income house holds. On top of which, I don't think that these Health Care plans will cover Mental Health costs.

Thanks for letting me vent and PLEASE Support my Lens http://www.squidoo.com/defeatingdepression

Simple things to ease Depression

Simple things you can do to ease the symptoms of Depression

1. Get out of the house, get fresh air in your lungs, if you live in a big city you may want to think twice about a lung full.

2. Try to improve your attitude about every day life, tr4y thinking of what is possible not what isn't.

3. Talk to people, when you shut your self away from others life can be a dark and empty place.

4.Add some structure to your life. Write down your short and long term life goals and how you need to go about getting things done and achieving them. Make a plan and stay with it.

5.Start liking your self. A lot of Depression related problems have to do with low self esteem. Try understanding why you do the things your doing that are causing you to not like the person you see in the mirror in the morning. Try changing your life style a little bit at a time and work on positive things to improve your outlook on life and yourself.

I truly believe that Defeating Depression in America should be at the very least as important as the war on terrorisim in the minds of Americans.

As someone who has fought with this insidious affliction for better than 30 years and as someone who has sturggeled to understand why I wanted to die instead of living on in this totally amazing and beautiful world we have. I am very scared at the apathy shown twords something that has the power to destroy our country.

There are so many different mental health problems that stem from Depression that to really understand it and to learn to deal with it and hopefully cure it, is going to take time, effort and of course Money. The longer you wait to start something, the longer it takes to finish it.

I'm 47 and still fighting with my demons because of a lack of understanding about the needs of the Mentaly Ill in this country. Just because someone is mentaly ill does not mean that they are dangerous or going to go off the deep end or that you have to keep your children away from them. What it means is that all the research money to to the care of the body and we ignore the mind.

If I have any say in the matter then PLEASE start spending some of that money on the mental health side of things.
