13 Red Flags to Warn a Bidder of a Fraudulent Transaction

...nope no monkey involved here...

As one of the first members in eBay.ph, I've had the privilege to observe the evolution of eBay. It has evolved into one of the top... no actually the top online marketplace in the country.

As such, it has ushered in a new breed of shoppers and sellers... and FRAUDSTERS. This unscrupulous people from around the globe constantly prey on innocent buyers. Newly exposed to the wonders and perils of online transactions, this "newbie" buyers constantly tread the traps of online fraud.

Like the Bayanihan spirit we Filipinos are known for... we have been helping each other combat eBay fraud constantly. Filipino or not, everybody is welcome to take part of the golden nuggets of eBay wisdom we have gathered through the years. Join our community: eBay NEWBIE | eBay HOME BOARD

Outlined below are 13 Red Flags to Warn a Bidder of a Fraudulent Transaction. It was first created by an eBay user, jenny_lake, and adopted by eBay.ph eBay master, katana_hunter. Its importance was recognized by eBay and is pinned to the top of the forums... serving as a reminder to everybody.

  • A popular item is offered for a price which seems too good to be true

  • An 'off-eBay' transaction is conducted through email

  • Payment options provide little or no security for the buyer

  • Misleading claims of transaction security or buyer protection

  • Item is no longer listed on eBay

  • The sellers location may be a clue to a fraudulent transaction

  • Item is listed on a hijacked account

  • Free shipping from a distant country

  • No photo or stock photos are used

  • One to three day auctions

  • Escrow other than escrow.com is used

  • A fraudulent Second Chance Offer is sent

  • The bidder needs to be pre-approved or the item is listed in a private auction

in reply to commanderjay I've sold a few archery sets in auction.ph but in the end eBay still wins the day. Both have their share of scammers... but I tell auction.ph has 200% more.

Good Lens I love the "Bayanihan" Part.

However, I tried ebay.ph but the thing is it is currently easier to do meet-ups and pay through cellphone rather than doing bank deposits or paypal (since paypal is also bank deposit unless you have a credit card).

I really hope that Paypal makes it possible for us to pay through our Cellphones and ATMs. The Banking industry in the Philippines hasn't been easy for online use yet (unless I missed something O.O)

what do you think of www.auction.ph though ?
