Defining the Rainbow

A Compendium of Color Lenses

I look for rainbows. When the sky is heavy with rain and the sun pushes out from behind thick, gray clouds, I know conditions are right for a spectral display and I go out to meet it. I've been known to run outside barefoot in frosty weather, eagerly scanning the sky; if in the car, I will change direction to search.

Color has always intrigued me for its powerful influence on mood and environment. After completing explorations of 10 individual colors I've gathered links to each page into this rainbow-filled lensography. From here, you can click on a specific color image and be taken to the full page for that color.

What will you explore first? Will you visit the page for your favorite color? Or will you choose to investigate a color of which you are less fond, in an attempt to understand its appeal to others? Before clicking on individual pages, though, please take some time to enjoy the colorful images and information on this page. Included are a quiz, a poll, and plenty of space for colorful commentary.

White: The Color

the-color-whiteSubtle and romantic, sleek and elegant, or sophisticated and sparkling - - white takes on many moods. It is the color of of brides, and of mourning; the color of purity and the color of cowardice. White brocade upholsters furniture in lavishly appointed homes; white canvas covers casual furniture at the beach.

White is the color of fresh cream and daisies, luminous pearls and shimmering diamonds, carved ivory and lace, White tigers and elephants are sacred in some cultures. In hotel rooms, fresh, white linens and fluffy white robes evoke ease and comfort. Many great works of art were carved from white marble, which is also the building material of classic architectural icons. Books bound in white vellum are rare and precious. Flour in rough white sacks is earthy and basic.

Red: The Color

red-the-colorRed is a study in contrasts: sensual pomegranates and comforting jello; sultry red lips and hearty apple cheeks. Sunrise... and sunset.

Red flames sear and red watermelon refreshes. Red means STOP, unless it's on lips pursed for a kiss and promising more.

Superman retreats to his red phone booth to don his red cape. Little boys covet red wagons; big boys covet red sports cars.

Orange: The Color

orange-the-colorWhich came first, the color or the fruit? Regardless, orange is one of those colors it's difficult to be neutral about. Orange evokes crisp fall days and favorite holidays. Think sweet potatoes and cinnamon, pumpkin pie and jack o'lanterns, autumn leaves and footballs. And don't forget that Cindrella's golden coach was really just a pimped out pumpkin.

Rainbow Rose

Rainbow Bouquet

A kaleidoscope of color in a single flower. A special growing technique that has to do with specially-treated water allows roses to take on different hues -- not just from flower to flower but from petal to petal. For the colorful person in your life (and don't forget to look in the mirror!), consider this delightful bouquet. These Rainbow Roses have been dubbed the Happy Flower, and it's easy to understand why.

Roses of a different color. The pot of gold at the end of this rainbow will be the happy smile on the face of the recipient!

Yellow: The Color

yellow-the-colorYellow is the color of sunshine, butter, and daffodils. It's happy faces and polka-dot bikinis, popcorn and lemonade. Dorothy followed the Yellow Brick Road and the Beatles lived in a Yellow Submarine. We wear yellow ribbons to support our troops and yellow silicon bracelets to remind ourselves to Live Strong.

Yellow is a joyful color: sunflowers and daffodils and refreshing lemonade on a hot day.

Pale golden yellow is the color of beach sand and the sun that shines overhead. It's the color of canaries and canary diamonds. Tennis balls are yellow and so are scrambled eggs.

Green: The Color

green-the-colorWhat does green mean to you? These days, the word green usually refers to environmental concerns and efforts to detoxify our world, but green is more than the symbol of a global movement, no matter how important and pervasive.

Green is viridian-hued monsters and jolly veggie giants; the color of the ecology movement and of toxic waste. Budding trees, delicately kissed with green are harbingers of spring, symbolizing rebirth and renewal. Green is lush, steamy jungles and glassy winter seas; the reassuring patina of the Statue of Liberty and the hazy opalescence of sea glass.

Chris Harrison, who is an expert at creating visualiztions of large sets of data, applied his talents to a collection of more than 16,000 named colors. The results, which he has configured a number of different ways, are stunning to look at and completely intuitive to comprehend. Shown above is a small image of one Color Flower. Blue: The Color

blue-the-colorBlue is the color of sky and sea; of sweet berries and juicy plums. Delphiniums are blue and so are irises, bluebells, and morning glories. Good sapphires are the color of cornflowers; chrysocolla and aquamarine are the color of the Caribbean Sea. Blue is the color of everybody's favorite denim jeans and Elvis' suede shoes, of true friendship and first place..

Pinocchio had the Blue Fairy; the Beatles dealt with the Blue Meanies. Smurfs are blue, as are the Cookie Monster and Aladdin's Genie.

Pencils That Are ALL Color

I recently purchased this set of woodless colored pencils (the 12-count) because I was so intrigued by them. I'm not an artist -- can't draw much of anything -- but I like to doodle and I like to experiment with color and line. Well, I'm having the best time. There's something very freeing about having every bit of the pencil surface be usable color -- so many ways to play and gratifying results even for someone who just likes to color. Plus they look really cool. So I went hunting for more colors and came across this set of 24. Ordering it.

Purple: The Color

purple-the-colorPurple is the color of passion and individuality, the color of royalty and of the church. Purple prose is vivid and sensual; shrinking violets are timid and tentative. The Cheshire Cat grins his sly grin and Barney the Dinosaur sings his silly songs. Speaking of songs (and critters), mention must be made of the Flying Purple People Eater and the inevitable question: Is the one-eyed, one-horned creature purple or does he merely have a gustatory preference for people of that hue? If the latter, The Joker and The Phantom should keep their guards up. Presumably, Grimace and Donatello are safe as they are not actually people. As for the California Raisins, the Purple People Eater might not consume them, but what will protect them from the rest of us?

Rainbows Are Everywhere

Pink: The Color

pink-the-colorPink is the color of Barbie shoes and bubblegum, of Pepto-Bismol and birthday cakes. It is the signature color of the Breast Cancer movement and the city nickname of Jaipur, India. Jail holding cells are painted "drunk-tank" pink to keep the inmates calm. Rose pink is for romance; puce is the color of squished fleas. Pink champagne is sipped from satin slippers. Hot pink is... shocking. Happy people are said to be "tickled pink" -- but not when they get pink slips from their employers. Pink is for princesses and pigs, flamingoes and flowers. Pink is sugary sweet and innocent or hot and sexy. It blushes delicately or swirls in a fuchsia frenzy. It is the color of salty corned beef and of thirst-quenching lemonade; of tart raspberries and creamy strawberry ice cream.

Brown: The Color

brown-the-colorBrown is one of those colors that people often discount . It's not immediately evocative of things we attribute with beauty, but a closer look reveals a wealth of beauty hiding in the plain old color brown. Consider chocolate -- creamy milk chocolate or rich, dark bittersweet. Look around your home at honey-toned maple flooring or the lush red-brown of cherrywood cabinets. Brown is warm and subtle. Coffee swirled with rich cream or laced with deep-amber whiskey; seashells pale and pearlescent patterned with intricate markings in caramel or umber. Eggs--tan and mocha, or speckled cocoa on white. And let's not forget leather -- soft and rich to touch and equally rich to the eye.

Black: The Color

black-the-colorBlack is the romance of midnight -- clandestine meetings among the deep shadows. Black is truffles and caviar, squid-ink pasta and shiny black mussels. Black is lacy black wrought-iron balconies and shiny marble floors; glowing ropes of Tahitian pearls and Lightning Ridge opals with rich color swirling against a deep, mysterious backdrop.
