Dehydrate Pears, other fruit and food tutorial.

One of my favorite snacks is dehydrated pear!

Dehydrating your own food at home is the most nutritious method of food preservation available.

No additives are needed. The process is simple, economical, and fun!

Next to fresh produce, fruits and vegetables dehydrated at home are the most nutritious available. Dried fruits sold in stores may contain additives. When you dehydrate fruits at home you simply wash them, slice them and place them in the dehydrator...healthy, easy and yummy!

Follow these step by step instructions to a really yummy & healthy snack!

Step 1: Select, purchase and wash pears of your choice (I use Bartlett pears)

Step 2: Core out center of pear, if you do not have corer, slice open and remove seeds
I am using my handy Pampered Chef corer in this pic
(see Amazon module below to purchase your own)

Step 3: With my super sharp Henckel knife (see Amazon module below)
I slice my cored pears approx. a 1/4 inch thin (thinner vs thicker is better in dehydration)

Step 4: Then I drop a few slices into a bowl of lemon juice for just a few seconds, this step is not for flavor but the lemon juice helps the pears from turning brown.

Step 5: Shake off excess lemon juice and lay flat on dehydrating trays, I lay the thicker ones on the bottom tray and more towards the center vs the edges.

Step 6: Stack 1 tray on top of another and fill it up...pear slices should not over lap eachother on tray, leave room between for good air flow as well.

Step 7: When you've filled all the trays, close up the lid and turn machine on. Shown here is 5 pears dehydrating, approx drying time is 8 hours. Tip: check on pears after a few hours and thinner brown ones may already be done and can be removed, move thicker, wet ones to lower trays speeding up the drying process.

Step 8: Once all slices are dried you can store them in a zip lock bag or tupperware container...mine never last that long ;o) Enjoy!

Would you like something to drink?

Obviously, dried fruit vs. fresh fruit lacks water content . The high water content in many fresh fruits contributes greatly to your hydration needs...so if snacking on dehydrated fruit especially remember to replenish your fluids with plenty of delicious water!

I have, but don't have a food dehydrator at the time. Wish I did!

Love your lens!

Tell me difference, the homemade to the one from the store.

I always have the fresh one.

Demaw says:

I used to. I am now inspired to take down my dehydrator and once again start dehydrating pears and other fruits and vegetables.

No...it looked way too time consuming, I'll buy snacks instead.

kiwisoutback says:

I don't, but I wouldn't because I don't have a dehydrator and I'd be the only one eating them... But I'd eat them if someone had them lying around, sure! I've bought my own dehydrated fruits before and they're pretty good.

OhMe says:

I have never had dehydrated pears but you sure make them sound great.

I love dehydrated fruits, well except prunes -- particularly apricots as grandma used them in her nut rolls. I'd like to dehydrate my butt. Ooops, can I say that on a g-rated lens? ;) Rock on!

My question would be, once you've dehydrated fruit, can you add it to a pie and bake it, or, can it only be eaten as is? 5*
