DE Unclaimed Money Search
Of the $30 BILLION in unclaimed property currently held by various State Treasury Departments across the U.S., only a small fraction is actually returned to its rightful owners every year. The same can be said for the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS in Delaware unclaimed money.
The reason that such a small percentage of unclaimed funds are returned to the owners, in Delaware and across the country, is because the government handles this money the same way they do with all money - POORLY! State employees were even convicted recently of dipping their hands in the pile of residents' lost money. Anthony Lofink, a son of a Delaware politician, and for accomplices were caught stealing from the Delaware Unclaimed Property Fund and using the people's missing money for their own purposes. For this reason, it's extremely important that you take the time to learn how to perform a thorough unclaimed property search if you would truly like to find and claim your money. The government is simply not going to get the job done.

Delaware State Treasurer Jack Markell is justifiably proud of the state's earned income tax credit campaign, aimed at returning money to it's rightful owners, and has returned MILLIONS to Delawareans. But again, unclaimed property comes from many other sources beyond tax credits, such as:
- unclaimed insurance benefits
- unclaimed security deposits
- cash or property like cashiers checks
- court deposits
- stocks
- payroll checks
- credits
- dormant savings and checking accounts
- uncashed money orders
- unused gift certificates
- safe deposit box contents
- lost cash dividends
- mineral royalty payments
- found utility deposits
- securities
Again, the state of Delaware is to be commended for it's efforts in returning missing money in the form of tax returns, but that's only part of the equation.
You should ALWAYS search for your unclaimed money on your own to guarantee you've exhausted all possibilities. But don't be fooled in to thinking you can just search your name at one of the many web sites out there claiming to have a "database" and think your search is over.
Many found money web sites will claim to let you search a "national unclaimed property database". But they're misleading you, because no such database exists, and the "databases" they use are often filled with bogus data. Additionally, many of these sites will attempt to charge you "per search" fees, and other bogus fees.
