Fried Green Tomatoes; a fruit prepared as a vegtable

Ranked #12,964 in Food & Cooking, #228,906 overall

They aren't just the title of a movie!

I have to admit, I only learned about fried green tomatoes when the movie first came out. Who knew that an unripe tomato could taste so good!

Before I tried them, I only thought of tomatoes as red, like in a BLT sandwich or a slowly simmered in a beautiful spaghetti sauce. But green, no way, not possible, who would ever eat them?

But if you never have tried them, you really should, they are quick to prepare and so delicious! Come on, I dare you, try them once and then come on back and let me know what you think!

Fried Green Tomatoes

Don't they just look so yummy?

So many ways, so little time!

type=textThere are plenty of different ways to prepare your green tomatoes.

Some people coat their tomatoes with bread crumbs (I like to use panko to be different), others use cracker crumbs, cornmeal or flour.

Some people dip them in beaten eggs before dredging, while others just dredge then fry.

Some people fry them in butter, others in margarine, oil or bacon fat.

Some people fry them, others bake or deep fry them.

The possibilities are endless, but any way they are prepared, I know they will be delicious!

I like Panko Bread Crumbs

Try them instead of regular bread crumbs

Panko is a variety of flaky bread crumb used in Japanese cuisine as a crunchy coating for fried foods.

Kokkoman Panko Bread Crumbs are unique because they are made from bread that has been custom baked to make airy, crispy crumbs. then the crumbs are toasted to a delicate crunch that won't burn as easily during cooking. And since they are unseasoned, Kikkoman Panko Bread Crumbs will combine perfectly with all types of seasoning ingredients.

Nutritional Data

A green tomato by itself is good for us and pretty harmless, however, let's face it, we're frying this baby! Nutrition is kind of out the window at this point!

I have to ask.......

Would you or have you tried fried green tomatoes?

Loading

Heck no, they're green! Or maybe you just haven't tried them yet

TheWhistler says:

No, but I sure would like to. Your lens makes us look like we are all loosing out on something.

WindyWinters says:

I'll try anything but I have tried fried green tomatoes. One year we had lots of green tomatoes in the garden (when we had a garden) that wouldn't ripen. Hubby and I got out the recipe book and made green tomato relish. Oh, boy. It was delicious but lots of work!

ArtByLinda says:

No I haven't, but it is funny to me because just recently a co-worker of mine asked me to bring her some green tomatoes from my garden. It was so hard to pick them green, knowing how much I love them when they are ripe, but she absolutely loves fried green tomatoes. I just have to try some after seeing this lens too!

JaguarJulie says:

Heck no ... I never have although I do live in the south! Will let you know when I tried them.

Sylvestermouse says:

Hard choice for me on the question because I don't eat any type of tomato. (I do use tomato sauce and paste) My husband loves fried green tomatoes and I deep fry them, covered in flour & pepper, for him.

Absolutely, and your favorite way to cook them is ......

Tipi says:

I've heard they are wonderful and sure would enjoy giving them a try, fried with bread crumbs....just make my day!

clouda9 says:

Oh yes! And the best ones for me have been a tinge tangy.

rr_flint says:

Yes, I've tried them. Just salt, pepper, and flour is how I saw someone else prepare them. Lot's of people I know like them. They taste ok to me.

Momsbusy247 says:

I want to try them, just don't know anybody who makes them and I don't have green tomatoes so I can't make them.

KimGiancaterino says:

They're yummy. We're growing lots of tomatoes this year. We get our breadcrumbs from the local Italian deli.

Definitely give them a try, you can make them as simple or fancy as you like and are comfortable with! Thank you for your angel dust! LOL

Kathy! YUMM girl ... that intro pic is fabulous! Tangent: Have you done a lens on bread crumbs? The reason I ask is that I found an Italian kind with olive oil, spices, and I think parmesan cheese -- that is ONE special ingredient for so many applications!
  • awelldressedbullet Sep 9, 2010 @ 3:47 pm | delete
..... not not yet Julie! And I think I'm in Squidoo overload today LOL
  • Sylvestermouse Sep 9, 2010 @ 3:09 pm | delete
Excellent lens! My husband loves fried green tomatoes and I have tons of stories that I could tell about my experiences as his new bride 27 yrs. ago, trying to learn to prepare them for him. Turns out, he prefers them lightly coated with flour and pepper. The easiest way I tried :) I should have just ask his grandmother. She was precious and would have told me anything. I just didn't want to tell her I didn't know how to fix them.
  • awelldressedbullet Sep 9, 2010 @ 3:47 pm | delete
I had to chuckle at you not wanting to tell grandma you didn't know how to fix them, I think we all did that as new wives LOL
