Delicious Sun Tea Ideas for Summer

When the nights grow shorter and the days grow hotter my mind turns to tea. Nothing is more refreshing on a summer day than an ice cold glass of tea, sweetened just right. And the best sort of tea to have is Sun Tea.

Easy to make, easier to drink.

You don't have to limit yourself to run-of-the-mill ordinary tea either. These are some of my favourite warm weather summer time sun tea drinks.

Choosing the Best Sun Tea Jar

Glass or Plastic

making sun tea in a mason jarThere are a wide range of jars and jugs available for making sun tea in these days. Most carefully labelled so that you know what it is, and some with a little spigot at the bottom even so you don't have to tip the jar. Most of these special jugs are made of a clear plastic.

I believe you need two things in a jar to make a good sun tea. It needs to be made of glass, and it needs to have a tight fitting lid. Tea in glass jars just tastes better. The tight fitting lid keeps uninvited guests out.

I recommend staying away from the jugs with built in spigots because these are incredibly difficult to keep clean. This makes a ripe breeding ground for bacteria which are going to make your next batch of tea not so great.

Two things I'm looking for in a sun tea jar.
It must be made of glass
It must have a tight fitting lid.

This has both.

How Do You Like Your Tea?

Some say it's better to have a cold drink on a hot day, others claim it's better to drink something hot.

But what's your preference?

Would you rather drink a glass of iced tea, or a mug of hot tea?

It's got to be Iced Tea

AlleyCatLane says:

Definitely cold tea. To me it is the most refreshing drink one can have on a hot summer's day.

poddys says:

I like hot tea (green tea, mint tea etc) but in the summer I do love a refreshing glass of iced tea. Mostly I drink hot tea in the UK because we don't have space in the freezer for ice cubes.

blanckj says:

It depends on my mood. I like hot tea at night or in the winter, but iced tea is a must in the summer.

miaponzo says:

Definitely a glass of iced tea any day :) I love it!

ShandiGP says:

Ok, I love both, but I REALLY love iced black tea!

Only Hot Tea will do

maryrussel says:

I usually drink hot tea but I find iced tea refreshing on hot days.

MissMerFaery says:

I definitely like my tea hot, even in the summer. I'll drink other cold drinks as well but for tea, it has to be hot!

mivvy says:

Hot tea on a hot day is the best drink to soothe your stomach

NanLT says:

These days I tend to make more hot tea than cold. Always with a bit of sugar and milk. Half the time though I forget to drink it and end up with cold tea.

Herbal Sun Tea

Cooling and refreshing

Try One of These Sun Tea Ideas

The only herbal blend I don't think would do well as a sun tea is one containing ginger. Anyone who has left a bag of ginger tea brewing too long can tell you just how hot that tea can feel in the mouth.

Stick with an herbal or fruit tea with more cooling and soothing properties.

Serve Your Tea Up Right

In a large tea glass

Cool and refreshing with beads of sweat coating the outside of the glass. That's the way tea should be served on a hot summer day.
