Del McCoury
Del's big brother turned him on to Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and in 1950 he bought himself some records one of which was a tune by Flatt and Scruggs. He was hooked on the bluegrass sound.
I never found out about Del McCoury until around 1999. I was listening to a great alternative radio station - Mountain Community Radio - that often has bluegrass programs when I heard him. It wasn't long before I had bought some of his stuff. I think just about any Bluegrass fan as well as most country fans would dig Del McCoury.
Del McCourt Meets Bill Monroe
Inspired by the likes of Earl Scruggs Del started learning how to play the banjo. It wasn't long until he was performing on a local radio station.Del was in the military for a short time, when he was discharged he played along with Jerry McCoury his younger brother at clubs in the Baltimore area.
On one particular gig he was playing with the Virginia Playboys fronted by Jack Cooke. Cooke had previously been in Bill Monroe's band and he and Bill were still friends. One night while they were playing music Bill came in and sat to watch. Bill was impressed so he invited Del to go on tour with him. In many ways that was the biggest break for Del McCoury
Del McCoury ~ The Early Years
From the beginning Del played with many different bands and line ups. This experience gave him a wide exposure to other's playing styles and performing with different people. In 1963, while still in his early 20s, Del became a member of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys. Del went into it thinking he would be playing the banjo, but when he arrived Bill told him he needed a guitar player. Del was hired and he played with the Blue Grass Boys for about a year.
In 1946 Del was married and he moved to California where he played for a short time with the Golden State Boys. Billy Baker, fiddle player for the Blue Grass Boys, also moved out west with Del. It wasn't long before they decided that there would be more opportunities back home.
When they first got back to Pennsylvania Del and Baker put together a group called the Shady Valley Boys, but they didn't stay together for long. In 1967 Del put together the Dixie Pals for which Baker was the fiddler on their first album.
