We all have our favorite radio stations that we listen to, especially in our vehicles. We like to flip between them as we drive to and from work, on errands and around town.Of course, the problem is that when you travel away from area, the signal breaks up and fades away. Most radio signals can only travel about 30 or 40 miles from their source.
That means while on a road trip, you might have to change radio stations every hour or so to find a decent signal, and even then your programming options might be limited to hog reports. Also, while it's nice to hop from station to station in your home area, it's not much fun scanning through static trying to find something -- anything -- to listen to.
Wouldn't it be great to drive just about anywhere without having to constantly find new stations to listen to?!
At the beginning of the 21st century, satellite radio became a reality. Now, it's possible to get uninterrupted, near CD-quality music beamed from space to your radio -- wherever your radio happens to be.
First, there was AM, then FM, and now...XM

XM is a primary provider of satellite radio. They have 2 "birds" in space (appropriately named "Rock" and "Roll"). XM Radio's ground station transmits a signal to its 2 orbiting satellites, which bounce the signals back down to earth, where the signals are captured by radio receivers.The XM receivers are programmed to receive and unscramble the data signal, which contains up to 100 channels of digital audio. The signal includes the encoded sound, song title, artist, and genre of music, all of which are displayed on the radio.
Subscribers can receive the XM signal for about 50 cents a day or less and get around 100 channels of music, talk and news - all crystal clear. Many of the channels have no ads. Programming is high-quality, provided by USA Today, BBC, CNN, Sports Illustrated, The Weather Channel, and other respected sources. XM bolsters that lineup with its own music channels.
XM has partnered with Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, Delphi Delco, Sony and Motorola to manufacture XM car radios. Each satellite radio receiver uses a small, car-phone-sized antenna to receive the XM signal. General Motors began installing XM satellite radio receivers in some models as early as 2001.
Even if your car doesn't have a satellite receiver, it's easy to have one installed. Even better, some can be "unplugged" from your vehicle, allowing you to enjoy satellite radio in your home or whenever you leave your car behind.

Delphi's XM SkyFi2 Radio Receiver offers convenient plug-and-play XM Satellite Radio reception for the car, home, or office, including the first-ever pause and replay functions for satellite radio. That's right...now you can pause or replay up to 30 minutes of live XM programming, and the SkyFi2 continuously and automatically saves the last 30 minutes of programming, including programming from multiple XM channels.
The unit also offers a stock ticker, a sports-scores ticker, and a built-in wireless FM modulator, and a clock, among other features.
Additional SkyFi2 features include a large scroll wheel and a convenient wireless remote control. You can navigate through direct-channel entry from both the receiver and the remote, and you can program up to 30 channel presets for one-button tuning to your station of choice. Also, the SkyFi2 adds a stereo analog minijack audio output for ready hookup with headphones or other audio equipment.
SkyFi2's display is easy to read. The channel guide lets you view 5 channels at a time while scrolling through the channels by channel name, number, artist name, or song title. You can also skip or add channels while scrolling. In addition, a "favorites" mode lets you preview the artist name and song title currently playing on your favorite channels before you select one.
SkyFi2 adapter kits for the home and vehicle let you enjoy uninterrupted XM radio service in any vehicle, at home, or at the office. The SkyFi2 vehicle adapter kit works in any existing car stereo system, and the SkyFi2 home adapter kit is adaptable to most home or workplace audio systems and multimedia speakers.
This package comes equipped with the XM SkyFi Vehicle Kit. This vehicle adapter kit is just the thing to complete your Delphi SkyFi2 radio system. To install your SkyFi2 in a car, you need this kit, which contains a vehicle cradle, a cassette adapter, an antenna, and a 12-volt power adapter.
The vehicle cradle holds your SkyFi2 receiver and provides connections for audio, power, and antenna cables. The 12-volt power adapter plugs into your cigarette lighter and powers SkyFi2 through the vehicle cradle.
