American elections are very important for all world, not only for USA, so we closely monitor what is going on in election years. For me personally it is pretty sad there are always only two options and it seems both options are year after year more similar to each other. The same trend can be spotted in Europe too.

Good lens. It seems Obama will take us to more taxes and regulation faster than the Republicans but I have hope that the awakening that Obama has caused will shift us to more freedom, less regulation. I hope this will provide more self-reliance and less government.

I have to interject- I happen to agree with your statement here: "Bilingual people are smarter! Bilingual people are a commodity. Speaking two languages should be a requirement." You are certainly correct as studies show bilingual children use more areas of the brain during development, and there's a litany of benefits to add.

However, if a French child comes to America, and is educated in their native French (by your logic) then how does that make them bilingual? The very same studies cited above also indicate that immersion is the key to learning language. Your thoughts?

This video presents an interesting juxtaposition against the history of the republican party, just as you spot the "offensiveness" you remember it's quite the opposite. Have our Republican leaders strayed so far from the values that make the GOP "gallant" that this is a knee-jerk reaction with the opposite impression?

Adonay, you put your name to shame; your opinion here is just another prime example of the kind of ignorance that got us where we are today. Your attitude fosters division rather than unity. You have no idea who made the video you are commenting about. Yes, she is white. You have a problem with that? If so, you are the racist, not her. She is a good, church-going, arms-bearing, law-abiding, willing to die for you citizen, with a multi-generational military family who is proud to have served and protected our country (that means YOU). She and I are both white. The majority of people, even long ago, in our country are and were white. If you don't like that, tough, but know that we would be willing to die for you. Would you be willing to do that for us? This young lady's military ancestors fought to stop Hitler.

It's time for you to stop playing the race card. It no longer is an issue unless YOU make it one Adonay. It's up to you to get a life and stop complaining!

I see nothing but white blue eyes babies. The video feels like a hitler made video. white supremacist. Embarrassing to the GOP. Why has the GOP deviated so much from its roots? It was the GOP that abolished slavery, passed amendments giving the right to vote to blacks and women. The GOP was never a racist white supremacist group. WHAT HAPPENED? I DID NOT LEAVE THE GOP, IT LEFT ME. What's the huge interest in making this country FOUNDED ON IMMIGRATION an English speaking country? Bilingual people are smarter! Bilingual people are a commodity. Speaking two languages should be a requirement. In addition, please GOP learn your history, this countries mother language is French. So, go ahead, lets all stop speaking other languages. Let's speak FRENCH! How about that GOP?
  • WhitU4ever Mar 25, 2011 @ 3:55 pm | delete
Adonay, you obviously read Dennis Prager's opinion above on why he is not a liberal anymore. And you completely missed his point regarding the English language. His point was that immigrants who have not learned the English language are not informed well enough about the issues we are dealing with in this country to cast an intelligent vote. Thus, we should all be required to speak the same language so that we can all dialogue and research all sides of every issue and know what we are voting for and why. Unfortunately, many English speaking residents of the U.S. don't bother to do their research. But I know that most foreigners are glad to be a part of this and aren't as lazy and spoiled as some of us are. It is ridiculous to cast a vote without thinking and researching and knowing what and who you are voting for. Yet, we shame ourselves for voting a man into office just because he was black and we think that racism was wrong, even though we aren't racist, or because, if you are black, he looks like you. A man's color doesn't guarantee that he is dedicated to serve and protect the people of this country.

Actually the republican party started long before the 1850's, it was known as the democratic party oddly enough. The democratic party at the same time period was known as the wigs. The republican party may have lost it's way, but the conservative values are based on GOD's own laws and therefore are perfect. Our founding fathers(all but about 5 of them most famous would be Ben Franklin)were all GOD fearing men and conservative at their very core. They(including Ben Franklin)along with every man that died in the Revolutionary war, WW1, and WW2 would be sick to see what they died for being slowly eroded by the liberal view of this once great country. I say once great country, because it has been systematically tore apart from what those highly intelligent men(our founding fathers)had written in those wonderful documents(The Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Bill of rights etc.).I am a republican in that I am a conservative and I pray that the party will soon return to it's roots.

I will not desert the Republican Party because they lost their way....I hope that they return to their principales...John McCain lost the election the republicans did not.

Great lens, thanks for putting the facts out there in an accurate manner. Most people today have no idea that the Republican party has the type of issue related roots like "anti-slavery" since they are often made to look like bigots in the media. In fact, the Republican party is the party that was able to get the civil rights amendments passed in the 1960's. These type of issues, as well as smaller government and lower taxes, are the type of things that attracted me to the Republican party as a young adult when Ronald Reagan was running for president. He inspired me to join the Army right before his win in November 1980.

Unfortunately, I can no longer call myself a Republican. I now refer to myself as a conservative. I am so disappointed in the Republican party over the last 8 years. The way they handled things as the majority party made me believe that they preferred to be the minority party. I fear that it may be too late for them to ever get this country on the right track again.

I can read the ideals and agree with many but in practice I don't see myself affiliating with either party. I tend to vote for the individual. Most stuff is just propoganda anyway. Unfortunately, like so many things, I think the stereotypes of Republicans vs. Democrats are often wrong and perpetuate bad feelings. I think there are many other factors aside from political beliefs that make people vote the way they do. Religion is clearly one of them as I can see from many of the comments. I don't think one group is more religious or spiritual than the other but how they live it is different. You've stirred up a good discussion.
  • Nathaniel Jan 9, 2009 @ 4:46 pm | delete
I am a Republican. I am very conservatived and I belive that people make their own choices. What you do effects the way you live. I could not be a Democrat for the fact of some of their beliefs. I will say that I vote on the man in the elections, not the party. But I will have to say that I personal have not see any good Democrat candidates in my time. I wish that Mike Huckabee would have won the election because I know what he can do. I was born in Arkansas, and lets just say, he cleaned up abuch of mess (left by the former governor of Arkansas, namely the U.S. last Democratic President.) If you like him, God help you.

I can not say which party I am with because I am what they call a centrist. I believe that both sides have good and bad issues. I am not fond of Obama nor do I wish to have another 4 years of the same with McCain. I am also not please with McCain's VP pick Palin. Some of the things Palin has done in the past scares me. I really haven't heard anything bad about Biden so, the only one that would have my vote is Biden. But that isn't written in stone either!

I am a homeocratican. I'm far too liberal for the republicans, way too conservative for the democrats or libertarians, and just too lazy for the green party.

I was really touched by your piece. I am trying to share with my son the election process and not to force him to be either republican or democrat, but to think for himself. I have always considered myself to be unafilliated, but my faith and my fundamentals are conservative and I truly appreciate you putting this together. Thank you
