Denatonium Benzoate, is described as the bitterest substance on earth.

Dilutions of as little as ten parts per million are unbearably bitter to most humans. Denatonium Benzoate powder is colorless and odorless but are often traded as solutions.

Denatonium benzoate is used by a number of companies as an aversive agent to prevent accidental ingestion in children and pets.

Denatonium benzoate has a number of uses. Some of these include being used as a denaturant in alcohol, making toxic antifreeze taste extremely horrible, used to deter people from nail biting, and as an animal repellent.

It is not known to pose any long-term health risks although exposure may be extremely irritating and unpleasant.

In 2005 a proposal that would require industry to add an ingredient to automobile antifreeze to make it less tasty to animals was introduced in the USA Senate.
