Introduction

This lens is about Denise Amber Lee, the mother of two who was murdered in January 2008. Check out my summary of the main facts and follow links to the most pertinent news articles and online coverage.

Who was Denise Amber Lee?

Denise Amber Lee was a 21-year-old mother of two boys, Noah and Adam and wife to Nathan. Nathan and Denise met four years ago and married soon after, setting up home in their native North Port, Florida. Their two boys came along in 2006 (Noah) and 2007 (Adam).

Denise went missing on January 17, 2008 and her body was discovered just two days later in a shallow grave near her home.

What Happened?

Denise's husband, Nahan left for work on January 17 before Denise got up. He spoke to her at 11am, but could not get hold of her later in the day. When he came home at 3.30pm, he found their two boys home alone. He called 911.

An hour before Nathan came home, neighbour Jennifer Eckert saw a green Camaro pull into the Lees' driveway.

At 6.14pm Denise herself called 911 from her kidnapper's phone. 911 operators heard her pleading with her captor for over 6 minutes. Although police could not trace the call, they were able to discover that the cell phone belonged to Michael King, a local 36-year-old unemployed plumber.

Police raced to King's home, but all they found was a child's blanket and duct tape with long brown hair stuck to it.

The next 911 call, at 6.23pm, came from a member of King's own family, 17-year-old Sabrina Muxley. Muxley called when her father relayed how his cousin, King had turned up at his house asking for a shovel and a can of gas. Crucially Muxley saw Amber alive, struggling in the back of the Camaro.

As night fell, three motorists witnessed Amber struggling in the back of the Camaro, although only one, Jane Kowalski, called 911 sometime between 6.30pm and 6.39pm. Interestingly, she was connected to Charlotte County 911 Call Center, where Denise's father, Rick Goff worked as a detective.

Police failed to respond at the location and Denise was shot to death a mere three miles away. King was arrested later the same night by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper on Toledo Blade Boulevard.

Initially booked for kidnapping, King pretended to be a victim of kidnapping along with Denise. However, evidence, including a ring left in the car by Denise and later, DNA evidence from her body tied him to the crime.

King was charged with abduction and murder on January 23 by Sarasota County prosecutors. He is currently in jail awaiting trial.

Botched 911 call handling

This case has garnered so much coverage because of the large number of 911 calls made while Denise was still alive, none of which lead to her rescue. Police have come under fire for mishandling the calls.

This ABC News article - Are Botched 911 Calls to Blame for Denise Lee's Death? - explains the controversy in more detail.
