Strikes Don't Matter
No one strikes out with God
Gina Taylor left God behind after high school. A paralegal in a large, prestigious law firm in Salt Lake City, she's settled and content with her life. So -- why does she have the feeling something is missing? The last place Adam Wilson would choose to live is Utah. Packed off to an out-of-state college after turbulent high school years, he's established himself and is on track to achieve his dream of becoming a partner in the law firm he works for.
God, however, has other plans, and bringing Gina back into the fold with Adam's help will force them both to decide where their futures lie.

Gina looked down at the splotch of coffee on her new blue skirt. At least it hadn't landed on the blouse. It would have stood out more on pink.
"That's what happens when you drink and drive," she muttered as she pulled into a parking spot. Hoping she could get inside without running into anyone, she hurried into the building. She was running later than usual, but still earlier than most of the employees. There was a perfectly good coffeemaker in the break room, but this morning she'd wanted something different from her favorite specialty shop.
Thankfully, the elevator was empty and rose swiftly to the ninth floor. As the doors opened onto an elegantly appointed floor, her luck ran out.
Coming down the hall was Jordan Farrin, an attorney who'd only been with the firm for about a year. She had no interest in Jordan. At twenty-seven, he was already married with two kids, but he was obviously showing someone new around. And that someone was drop-dead gorgeous. Not that it likely mattered, she thought philosophically. He was probably married with a couple of kids, too.
That wasn't the problem. The real problem was the word "tact" wasn't in Jordan's vocabulary. He had a perfectly wonderful wife who Gina liked immensely and, in another time, might have been friends with. Jordan, however, was best experienced in small doses.
"Morning Regina," Jordan greeted her and stopped. He always insisted on using her full name even though nearly everyone else, including the partners, called her Gina.
"Morning Jordan," she replied, coming to a stop as well.
"Adam, this is Regina Taylor, one of our best paralegals. Regina, this is Adam Wilson. He's visiting the firm today."
Gina smiled, feeling heat rise in her face. Looking up, she was mesmerized by a pair of gold-flecked, dark brown eyes. The air in the corridor was suddenly warm and her tongue stuck to the roof of her mouth. She knew she was staring, but since she couldn't get her tongue or mouth to move, it was all she could do.
"It looks like you've spilled coffee on your skirt." The hint of disapproval in Jordan's voice jolted her out of her trance. It was all she could do not to groan out loud.
Adam turned to look at Jordan, blatant disbelief in his expression.
"You didn't say that," he admonished. "Tell me you didn't just say something so insensitive to Miss. . ." he turned back to Gina, "Miss Taylor, right?"
She nodded, at the same time wishing the floor would open up and swallow her whole. At the very least, it would be nice if someone else came along and rescued her. She wondered briefly at the familiarity between Jordan and Adam, which allowed Adam to take Jordan to task so easily. Jordan, she noticed, had the grace to look sheepish.
She knew nothing about men's fashions, but Adam's navy suit and crisp, white shirt screamed self-confidence and authority. His tie, she noted, matched the small piece of burgundy and navy stripe handkerchief peeking from the breast pocket. Jordan immediately responded to that authority, even if he bristled at it.
"It's nice to meet you, Miss Taylor."
Adam's smile caused the corner of his eyes to crinkle, and his expression warmed approvingly, sending tingles down her spine.
"Nice to meet you too, Mr. Wilson," she returned his greeting with equal formality. A vision of Dennis the Menace floated through her head and she stifled a giggle.
As if he knew what she was thinking, he leaned closer and offered in an undertone, "Jordan's middle name is Dennis, you know." The scent of his aftershave wafted around her; an earthy, musky scent that made her toes curl.
The joke was lost on Jordan as she clapped her hand over her mouth to keep from laughing out loud. His annoyed glance traveled from her to Adam and back. "Well, we shouldn't keep you any longer, Miss Taylor," he said stiffly. "See you later."
She nodded, pressing her lips together tightly, but unable to completely muffle her laughter. Jordan was obviously offended at being left out of the joke, but she didn't want to make it worse by trying to explain. Adam's eyes gleamed wickedly in the light, and he winked at her before turning to follow Jordan down the hall.
Long after the elevator doors closed behind them, she stood motionless in the hallway. The sound of laughter awakened her from her reverie - reminding her she was still standing in the corridor with a rapidly drying coffee stain on her skirt.
Fifteen minutes later, she was sitting at her desk with a large wet spot on her skirt, but at least the coffee had come out. She hoped the spot would dry by lunchtime.
Adopting Alyssa
God doesn't play the odds
When a tragic accident on the interstate leaves an orphaned 4-year-old in her charge, social worker Helen Carstairs is certain she's found the perfect couple to adopt her. Jason and Kelly Moore are a young couple in her congregation with a strong, steady faith. The only thing that would make life more perfect for Kelly would be a baby of her own, not an enchanting four-year-old with adorable green eyes and the brightest smile this side of heaven. God seems to have other ideas and soon Kelly finds herself wondering how she got along without the little bundle of energy.
So, what are the odds that the bearer of so much joy would also be the catalyst that uncovers a secret Kelly thought long buried in her past? A secret which could undermine her faith and destroy her marriage, all in one fell swoop. But, as her world threatens to crumble around her, Kelly discovers the miracle of second chances and realizes God doesn't play the odds.

She nodded. "Yeah. Wasn't that the one where some idiot in a Jeep cut a semi off and caused two cars to crash?"
"Yep. That was it. Because the road was icy, the resulting chain reaction killed six people. The guy in the Jeep walked away without a scratch."
"I read in the paper recently he's being charged with reckless driving and a few other things. If convicted, he might go to prison, but only for a few years. So, what has this particular patient to do with all that?"
"She was in one of the cars. Her parents were both killed."
"And what has that to do with us?"
No use beating around the bush. "Helen asked if we would consider taking her in."
Kelly's eyes widened. Silence fell between them as she studied him. He forced himself to continue eating while she digested the information.
"Why? Doesn't she have any other relatives?"
"She's not from here. Helen and her staff have been looking for relatives, but so far, none of the relatives they've contacted want her. Helen also explained her parents were not her biological parents-they only adopted her a few months ago. And now she's an orphan, again."
"I see."
"Do you?"
"Do I what?"
"Do you really see what's happening here?"
"What do you mean?"
Jason regarded her somberly. They had been trying for a year now and she had yet to conceive. He knew she wanted a child; sometimes she seemed almost desperate. He didn't mind the trying-in fact, he rather enjoyed the process-but her disappointment month after month always tore at his heart. He loved her for who she was, and although he wanted children, too, he was willing to wait on God's time. Kelly wasn't, and with each month that went by without results, he could see her faith slipping.
"Do you remember what last Sunday's sermon was about? I thought it particularly applied to us."
She shook her head.
"It was about how God answers prayers in ways we least expect. We've both prayed for a child-"
"No!" Kelly's reaction was unnaturally loud and seemed to echo in the large room.
Jason reached out and took her hands in his. They were cold despite the warmth of the room.
"Kelly, please, just listen for a moment." He rubbed her hands as he spoke, warming them in his own.
"Why us?" She snatched her hands back and folded her arms across her chest. "The state must have hundreds of foster families they can place her with. Why us?"
