Dennis The Menace

I grew up reading the escapades of Dennis The Menace and Gnasher, a comic strip in the Beano comic in the United Kingdom and as far as I knew he was the ONLY Dennis The Menace.

Years later I saw the film 'Dennis The Menace' starring Walter Matthau and I was wondering why they had changed the character, as far as I remembered Dennis The Menace was a bully and not an over enthusiastic kid that caused mischief by just trying to be over helpful. I was thinking where is Walter (the wimp that Dennis always used to terrorise) and who is this Mr Wilson character?

It was only recently that I discovered that there is two separate Dennis The Menaces, one created is the US and the other created in the UK. The amazing thing is that they debuted within three days of each other. Therefore, this lens is created to show you the differences between each character and to show you the Dennis The Menace that you didn't know about (if that is the case).

Dennis The Menace UK at a Glance

Dennis the Menace (known as Dennis the Menace and Gnasher since 1970) is a long-running comic strip featured in The Beano children's comic, published by D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd, Dundee, Scotland, in the United Kingdom.

The strip first appeared in issue 452, released on 15 March 1951 (cover dated for the off-sale date of 17 March), and is the longest running strip in the comic. From issue 1678 onwards (dated 14 September 1974) Dennis the Menace replaced Biffo the Bear on the front cover, and has been there ever since.

Three days earlier, on 12 March 1951, another Dennis the Menace debuted in the United States. The two strips should not be confused — as a result of this the US series has been retitled Dennis for UK consumption, while the British character's appearances are often titled "Dennis and Gnasher" outside the UK.

Dennis the Menace and Gnasher was first drawn by David Law (1951 - 1970), then David Sutherland (1970 - 1998). David Parkins took over in 1998, but due to his other...

Dennis The Menace (1959 TV Series)

The Dennis The Menace TV sitcom which ran for four season with a total of 146 humour packed episodes was based on the famous Hank Ketcham comic strip. It starred Jay North as Dennis Mitchell; Herbert Anderson as his father, Henry; Gloria Henry as his mother, Alice; Joseph Kearns as George Wilson and Sylvia Field as Martha Wilson.

Dennis is an energetic, well meaning, but trouble prone boy who inflicts himself on his neighbor George Wilson which causes many humourous disasters.

Unfortunately Joseph Kearns (Mr Wilson) died suddenly of a heart attack in 1962 (towards the end of the third season) and was replaced by Gale Gordon who played the part of Mr. Wilson's brother. It was believed that the show had "jumped the shark" (an expression that was made famous by Henry Winkler in the late 1970s when Winkler playing the infamous 'Fonzie' literally jumped over a shark in a 3 episode story in Happy Days) at the time Joseph Kearns died, but it ran one more season.

Dennis the Menace (also known in the United Kingdom as Dennis) is a 1993 live-action film based on the Hank Ketcham comic strip of the same name. The film was directed by Nick Castle, written by John Hughes, and produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Hughes Entertainment. It concerns the misadventures of a mischievous child with a cowlick and a grin who wreaked havoc on his next-door neighbour, Mr. Wilson, and usually helping out with his friends, Joey and Margaret, and being followed everywhere by his dog, Ruff.

The plot centered around the misadventures of Dennis Mitchell, who after creating a perchant of disaster, is babysat by Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. But when Dennis did something wrong with Mr. Wilson, Dennis runs away and even comes face-to-face with the film's main villain, Switchblade Sam. The film was even notable as the first time the title character was accurately cast as a five-year-old.
