I love Lehane. He is on the list of people (fairly short) that I always buy his new book as soon as it comes out. The story doesn't matter, he has proven he can do an excellent job with just about any topic.

His stories are dense and well plotted. His characters always seem realistic and believable. As good as his early Kenzie/Gennaro mysteries were, he has grown so much since then as a writer since then.

As it happens the wire is currently my favorite TV show of all time, but that likely has no huge direct bearing on him...he only wrote a few episodes.
