Gum Disease - Why it is So Hard to Keep Your Gums Free of Infection
The problem with keeping our gums free of infection, is in part because of the teeth. They are protruding out of a soft tissue called gingiva or gum tissue...
It is difficult to keep our gum tissue free of disease. Estimates vary, depending on who you talk to. On the low end of the scale you might hear that 20 percent of people have this problem. On the high end, you may hear as many as eighty percent.
Whichever stat is correct doesn't really matter. In either case, the high or low end, too many people have periodontal disease and it needs to be addressed. Many people don't think they have a problem, but they do. Unfortunately, it is difficult for most people to see it. The rely on their dentist to tell them. But it seems that dentists are busy with a different focus: your teeth themselves. The health of the gum tissue is something they might look at but might not give a lot of consideration too.
The problem with keeping our gums free of infection, is in part because of the teeth. They are protruding out of a soft tissue called gingiva or gum tissue. If you can imagine where the teeth meet the gum tissue for a moment it may become self-evident that there are little pockets of tissue that are open. In these small places, bacteria can easily accumulate causing infection and inflammation.
Over time, this can grow into a problem. As the infection grows more toxins are secreted onto the gum tissue, damaging it. Over time, the gum tissue begins to recede and this creates ever greater surface area for the bacteria to proliferate over. It's really astounding when you think about it. Next, read more to learn what you can do about this problem.
