Dentures White Rock | How To Choose A Denturist

Ranked #13,439 in Healthy Living, #211,272 overall

There's some good information here if you are thinking of getting complete dentures, or even if you're already a denture wearer

On this site, Dentures White Rock, you can benefit from my experience as a denture wearer for 10 years.

I plan to give you enough information that will help you make a decision whether or not to get dentures.

This can be a very hard decision for some people, but not for others. I found it very difficult to decide what to do. It took me a couple of months to make up my mind, even though my teeth were in very bad shape.

So if you are having a tough time of it, realize that you're not alone in your dilemma.

I'm Not A Denturist

But Read On...

First, I'm not a denturist or a dentist; I created this site to relate my experiences to people who are thinking about getting full dentures or partial dentures, and to people who have just received their dentures. The photographs on this page are of the Gordon Brown Denture clinic in White Rock, the denturist that I go to.

Even if you have been wearing dentures for some time you will find some good tips here.

My aim is to provide lots of information on this site, help you in making the decision of whether to get dentures or not, and hopefully to steer you away from having a bad experience.

Affordable Dentures That Fit Properly

Choosing A Denturist

You know, you really can't beat word of mouth. Ask around, if you find some people who say their denturist is great, that sounds pretty good to me. Book an appointment; see if you like his personality, if he explains things to your satisfaction, and has a caring attitude. Ask if he belongs to any professional organizations, because he should. How does the place look - clean, tidy?

Check that he has current licenses, and that he is in good standing at the Better Business Bureau. The BBB is not a government agency, they just appear that way. They make their money by charging the companies that register with them. Not all businesses register with them for whatever reason, so if they're not listed, I wouldn't hold it against them. Some people probably figure they don't get good value for their money, and I can certainly understand that.

The Lowdown On Denture Care

Handle Them Carefully

For starters, a really good idea is to put water in your bathroom sink while brushing your dentures. I don't always follow my own advice, I dropped them in the sink once and a tooth broke. My wallet felt a little lighter after that, $100 lighter.

There seems to be a debate about this one: whether to use a regular brush to clean your dentures, or the kind that's made especially for dentures. The latter have very stiff bristles, and I don't use them for that reason. It's good to take your dentures out at night and put them in a container with water and denture cleaning tablets; they work great.

Denturists claim that tooth paste is too abrasive for dentures. Whether all denturists are in agreement on this I can't say, but I don't use tooth paste because - well, to be on the safe side. Denturists do recommend rinsing your mouth and dentures after you eat.

Something else that's very important is to visit your denturist once a year. He will check the denture stability and the structural integrity of your denture and bite. A tissue and bone assessment is also done.

Denturists highly recommend replacing your dentures approximately every 5 years. When I was first told that many years ago, I thought "well that's a good way to bring in some more revenue." I have since changed my tune. Dentures wear down over a long period of time, then they don't fit as well. If you don't replace them, they can cause bone and tissue changes.

Poor fitting dentures can lead to bite problems, speech impediments and tissue irritations. Leaving this condition unchecked can lead to complicated situations in the future.

Complete Dentures or Partial Dentures

Lots Of Decisions To Be Made

If you are contemplating getting full dentures, or maybe just the upper dentures, I know very well what a hard decision it is. Well, hard for some of us, but maybe you are the type of person who doesn't have difficulty making up your mind about this. I remember vividly the tough time I had; it took about two months for me to make up my mind.

Which is peculiar in a way, because my teeth were very bad, and I didn't have the $21,000 to "give me a nice smile" as my dentist phrased it. That was in 1990. Anyway, I had already bought him a new Jaguar, and I didn't want to give him any more money. So really, I hardly had a choice; crowns, bridges, and all that would have cost way too much.

You will notice I mentioned above that maybe you will just get the upper denture, and didn't mention the lower denture. As you may know, it's the lower denture that gives people all the trouble. The upper denture is held in place by suction, but the lower one has really nothing to hold it in place.

When eating, or sometimes talking, it can move out of place and come crashing down in the wrong place: rather painful, and you will probably have sore gums for awhile. I once went to a dentist who wouldn't remove my lower teeth, and wouldn't put in a lower denture because of these problems.

The Denture Clinic

The First Step

The denture clinic I go to doesn't charge for the initial consultation, I really don't know what other denturists do. If a denturist wants to charge you for the first visit, I would go somewhere else. The denturist will listen to your concerns and advise you on the best course of action.

Regarding the best course of action, the denturist will let you know whether or not you are a candidate for full dentures.
Gordon Brown, registered denturist
Apparently, with some people their gums and bone structure are such that dentures just won't work for them.

That came as a shock to me. When I asked the denturist if I was a candidate, I held my breath awaiting his answer. I don't know what in the world a person would do if they couldn't get dentures. I don't envy them.

With the denturists help, you will have to decide what quality of dentures you want, whether to get soft or hard dentures, uppers only, dental implants or not, and just how white you want your dentures to be.

You will also have to decide whether you want your remaining teeth to be removed in a dentist's office, or the hospital. I opted for the hospital, partly because I'm rather squeamish, but also because the procedure didn't cost me anything, I just had to pay for the dentures.

Obtaining Immediate Dentures

This Is Usually Possible

The good news is, when you wake up after your teeth are removed, your new dentures are already in place! I didn't know I would get immediate dentures, I thought I would have to go toothless for a week or two, and I wasn't looking forward to that.

By the way, you can read more about immediate dentures here

The not-so-good news is that there are people who don't tolerate their dentures too well, and have various problems. How much of that, if any, could be attributed to poor denture work I couldn't say.

I'm very fortunate, I have no problems to speak of, aside from the normal difficulty of that lower denture. I often think it's one of the best decisions I've made; I now have a nice smile for the first time in my life, and I sure don't miss those big dental bills. Every visit the dentist would rattle off half a dozen more items that I would have to pay for.

Would I give any credit to my denturist for not having any problems? You bet, and I can highly recommend him. He's Gordon Brown, of Envision Denture and Implant Centre. 2055 152 St. #104 in South Surrey. Ph. 604-538-3384. Gordon is BPS certified.

He's a great guy with a very pleasant and helpful staff, ensuring patients receive the utmost in quality care.

I will be adding more tips and information to the site Dentures White Rock from time to time, so come back again!
