Depression is common among the elderly

Life changes as we get older, that is just the way things are. With age comes a certain amount of wisdom and also a good deal of wistfulness about the past, whether it is good memories of family and friends or special moments that you will never forget. Some folks age gracefully and are able to handle the transition to their later years. Unfortunately a lot of folks can't get past the fact that they are getting older and that is certainly understandable. Depression is common problem with many senior citizens. Sadly depression in older folks is often just written off as just being generally unhappy. It shouldn't be ignored because of age, because as long as there is still have a breathe in you there is still hope to break the chains of depression.

One common reason for their depression

Senior citizens who have serious illnesses such as heart disease often are depressed. The thought of them dying in the near future would make anyone depressed. And being depressed unfortunately has an adverse effect of being cured of their other serious ailments. It's a vicious circle.

Other reasons for depression in the elderly

  • Being female
  • Being single, unmarried, divorced, or widowed
  • Lack of a supportive social network
  • Stressful life events
  • Certain medicines or combination of medicines
  • Family history of major depressive disorder
  • Fear of death
  • Living alone, social isolation

What are the treatment options for depression

Antidepressants are used for depression with older adults as well those who are younger. Although side effects must be taken into consideration with these types of medications.
Another is treatment is psychotherapy which is usually used in conjunction with antidepressants. Group therapy has also been found to help with depression as well as treating the health issues that caused the depression in the first place.
