I was just thinking about this the other day. My dad grew up during the Depression and when we were kids he used to make us creamed tuna on toast. It's basically just cram of mushroom soup with tuna and peas scooped over toast. Cheap dinner and my brother and I loved it!

I grew up on a farm and we spent the entire summer preserving any extra food we grew - I never knew people actually bought vegetables until I was in college! We preserve, can or freeze EVERYTHING!

My garden produces flowers only, which a decadent treat for indoors when we should perhaps be more practical with fruit and vegetables.

Since I got a pressure canner, I'm and a meat canning mission. Meals, too, like stews and soups.

Aside from the pickles and turning tomatoes into sauce for all kinds of dishes I also freeze much of the harvest, Pumpkin made into soup freeze beautifully and broccoli, beans and so on also freeze with not much trouble. I am a frugal cook and have cut down on stove use and other things to save power. *Blessed* and featured on Blessed by Skiesgreen,. Hugs

never thought I would live through 2 depressions. Even though they say this isn'y, it seems to me like this one beats the first one!! Tks to our government and our President. Instead of hiring consultants why not hire historians. We keep making the same mistakes!!

I make jams and jellies but they have too much sugar in them to make this viable for large quantities. I intend to make pickles and I do make chutney - (again too much sugar in chutney). I don't really know how to dry food - so that would be an interesting topic for me), but I freeze summer gluts and store root vegetables and pumpkins. I've tried salting but found that too much salt was used up. Not easy.

When I cook, I freeze the food in single serve portions. This way I don't eat out as much.
