Descriptive Concept Maps

A descriptive concept map as seen in the diagram to the left, is used to visually represent and organize complex information. This variation of concept mapping can be especially useful in situations where you need to manage complicated data or when you brainstorm ideas and intend to build upon them.

As the map itself is always rooted in a fundamental concept or fact, the intention here is to further detail the root concept as visually as possible. In the case of the illustration here, the central theme is "the family kayak trip to Canada." This core topic, which is first broken down into specific divisions or 'branches', can then explored in parts making the process more organized and comfortable. In the diagram, there are three such major divisions, under which a number of cells containing relevant information have been drawn.

Students should be taught to make the cells under each of these divisions more specific as they progress deeper into the map and if necessary, may further split off the cells into more specific branches. And as always, it is vital that each cell contains a particular keyword or key phrase that can wholly represent an entire concept or event. When students create a cell, it can be very helpful to add appropriate images to it wherever possible because images will serve as visual tokens for the mind and can integrate related information into the thought-stream much more efficiently.
