Desert Beauty

Ranked #6,242 in Pets & Animals, #155,548 overall

A selection of poems, thoughts and inspirations which reflect the beauty of the desert.

The desert often invokes images of a vast expanse, a timeless space of beauty, wonder and longing. Many come to the desert to commune with a higher power or the forces of nature. Indeed, for much poetry about the desert was an allegory for a spiritual quest. Others come to witness natures spectacle at its finest - the forces of erosion, wind and water, thunderstorms, flash floods, bitter cold and broiling heat. The places where life clings and thrives, sometimes for only days, other times for centuries.

Below, please enjoy an inspired collection of thoughts, poems and inspirations which reflect and reveal the wonders of the desert as well as some photos to spark your imagination.

"One gets two impressions-so strong that they seem almost too big for the soul to hold-like the soul-smiting terror that comes to one who gazes long at the stars. The two impressions are of numberless infinitely-reaching horizontal lines and of eternal silence" (White 1909:64) When speaking of the Grand Canyon

One can lose oneself here, both physically and philosophically and in a seemingly endless variety of environments. Perhaps one's first and most lasting impression is the immensity of it all. - Jim Harpster

desert canyons
When your spirit cries for peace

come to a world of canyons

deep in an old land,

feel the exultation of high plateaus,

the strength of moving waters,

the simplicity of sand and grass,

the silence of growth.
- August fruge

Recalling their first hike below the rim in 1948, the Sutton and Sutton recounted their initial impressions of Grand Canyon as follows:

"Here everything was sharp and clear. Here everything came into focus. And here we came to reaffirm the one great fact of the Canyon land. It was a quiet land. The trees, the cliffs, the very gorge itself made no noise save for some imagined hollow breath of hugeness, We had entered a world in which we were masters of our thoughts, but happily mastered and conquered by the immensity around us. "

The colors are such as no pigments can portray. They are deep, rich and variegated and so luminous are they that the light seems to flow out of the rock rather than be reflected by it. - Clarence Dutton

Desert Sonnet

By Phillip Camitses

desert tree
Oh desert I call out to you;

Your clear dry air reveals clarity of distant places my eyes see and hands touch;

Your quiet desolation so stark it screams to me;

Your hidden life to a casual observer is revealed to the patient;

Your dryness allows my whole body to breathe;

Your colorful mineral soils are not hidden by trees;

Your trails and roads offer access into respite;

Your biting plants and animals teach me how to respect others;

Your refreshing oasis sparkle and wink a playful laughter;

Your flash of flood and lightning flashes in my mind as an impressionistic painting;

Your sage and creosote out number the diamond stars in ink black skies;

Your snapshot images a pronghorn leap a tortoise snort a rock fall;

Your etchings of ancient others from early times past;

Oh desert I call out to you.

Desert Rose

Lyrics By Sting

desert roseI dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love
