Design Matters: What Do Your Business Cards Say About You?

Your business card provides a vital first impression of your business. Done right, it portrays professionalism and gives a glimpse of your brand ... meaning who you are and what you offer.

Many business cards are hastily thrown together, however. Rather than a logo, they showcases clipart. Instead of quality cardstock, they're printed on flimsy micro-perf business card paper from the office supply store. The contact information may be perfect, but the layout leaves much to be desired. What impression does a less than professional business card leave with your prospect?

Whether you do it yourself or have them done professionally, It's important to design business cards with the end in mind. Think about your target audience. What will they want to know about you? How do you want to be perceived by them? What is the message that you want to portray?

  • Logo placement

  • Contact placement

  • Tag line

  • What gets placed on the front of the card, and

  • What gets placed on the back, if anything

  • Overall message, overall appearance

Beyond Making Business Cards

You've designed the perfect business card. Now what? A business card is only useful if you use it!

Aim to hand out a certain number of business cards each day or week (depending on your field of business, of course).

Consider putting a sticker with a current promotion on each card such as 10% off manicures or a special of the month

Always hand out 2 cards - one for the requester, and one for them to pass on to a friend.
