Reality Show Meets Interior Design : or "High Stakes Meets High Style"
It's probably not a surprise considering how much I enjoy both reality TV shows and the interior design shows of HGTV, that I'd be a fan of "Design Star" - HGTV's reality show that has contestants competing for an HGTV contract and their own show.
There have been two installments so far. The 2006 winner's show, "Color Splash" is quite the sensation. It will be interesting to see what the 2007 winner comes up with.
The 2008 edition of Design Star premieres June 8, 2008! Be sure to come back for updates as the competition unfolds!
The finalists, many of whom run their own successful interior design businesses, include architects, a former elementary school art teacher, a furniture designer and a police officer who patrols by day and designs by night.
The HGTV Design Star season three finalists are Jennifer Bertrand, Olathe, Kan.; Tricia Beaudet, Shelby Township, Mich.; Dwayne Paul DeRouen, Lafayette, La.; Tracee Dore, Louisville, Ky.; Matt Locke, Los Angeles, Calif.; Jerome Scott Miller, Winston-Salem, N.C.; Michael Stribling, College Station, Texas; Michael Verdugo, Hollywood, Fla.; and the additional finalist selected by online users.
TIME FOR THE FINALE: It's up to you, America! Watch the final challenge between Matt and Jennifer.
CONGRATS to Jennifer Bertrand, the newest Design Star!

HGTV Design Star is an American reality competition show that airs on the cable television network HGTV. It premiered Sunday, July 23, 2006 and aired new episodes on HGTV every Sunday night at 9 PM Eastern Daylight Time/Pacific Daylight Time, with encore presentations Thursdays at 8 PM E/P and Saturdays at 6 PM E/P.
The show is hosted by Clive Pearse. Vern Yip, host of Deserving Design; Genevieve Gorder, host of Dear Genevieve; and Candice Olson, host of Divine Design, currently serve as the show's three judges. Previous judges include Cynthia Rowley, a designer of fashion and home accessories, and Martha McCully, executive editor of the magazine InStyle.
Each week the remaining contestants participate in an interior design challenge such as designing a living space or creating a space in empty room using unconventional items from a pet store, mechanics store, or a discount store. The designers are given a specified amount of time to complete each project, as well as a specified amount of cash in order to create a design to be judged.
The contestants compete for their own design show on HGTV, which follows the format of similar shows. Each week the judges decide who to eliminate, and Clive Pearse uses the phrase, "Your show has been cancelled" to one or more designers.
The first season with ten contestants premiered on Sunday, July 23, 2006, and ended on Sunday, September 10, 2006.
The second season with eleven contestants premiered on Sunday, July 29, 2007 and ended on Sunday, September 16, 2007.
The third season with only nine contestants (the least the show has seen since the series began) premiered on Sunday, June 8, 2008, and ended on Sunday, August 3, 2008.
The fourth season premiered on Sunday, July 19, 2009. This season, the judges chose the Design Star, not America. Also, season four featured a semi-finalist competition between Alissa Sutton, Gary Andrews, and Torie Halbert. In the end, Torie Halbert was voted into the competition by the other contestants. The season ended on September 13, 2009 with Antonio Ballatore the winner; his new show will premiere on HGTV in January 2010. Dan Vickery, the runner-up this season, was voted the fan favorite on the Design Star website and will get his own online show which should be premiering soon.
The winners are:
2007: Kim Myles - her show will be called "Myles of Style" with a slogan of "No Budget, No Problem!", and debuts on HGTV March 16!
2006: David Bromstad - his HGTV show is called "Color Splash"
