Designer Baby: Is This The Future?

A Los Angeles fertility clinic is offering a new service that would allow couples to choose their baby's physical traits, including eye and hair color, the BBC recently reported. The LA Fertility Institutes said it has already received half a dozen requests for the service and expects the first designer baby to be born next year.

It would seem that what was once refered to in science fiction stories is now a reality. Parents can now decide what they want in a child and order these looks and traits much like they might order a meal in a resturant. This has sparked a new controversy about the ethics of genetic enhancement.

It has been reported that in a survey of 999 people that 56% supported prenatal genetic tests to counter blindness and 75% for mental retardation. Approximately 10% would like to test for athletic ability and 10% voted for improved height. Another 13% said that they would like being able to select superior intelligence.

Designer Baby And Cloning

Is there a moral difference between designing a baby and cloning a human being?

While there are differences between making sure that a baby has the correct genes to assure parents of desired characteristics and cloning a human being, the difference may be lost to some.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a "designer baby" as "a baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering combined with in vitro fertilization to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes or characteristics."

Human cloning is the creation of a genetically identical copy of an existing or previously existing human. The term is generally used to refer to artificial human cloning; human clones in the form of identical twins are commonplace, with their cloning occurring during the natural process of reproduction. There are two commonly discussed types of human cloning: therapeutic cloning and reproductive cloning. Therapeutic cloning involves cloning cells from an adult for use in medicine and is an active area of research: while reproductive cloning would involve making cloned human beings. Such reproductive cloning has not been performed and is illegal in many countries. A third type of cloning called replacement cloning is a theoretical possibility, and would be a combination of therapeutic and reproductive cloning. Replacement cloning would entail the replacement of an extensively damaged, failed, or failing body through cloning followed by whole or partial brain transplant.

Although the practice of cloning organisms has been widespread for several thousands of years in the form of horticultural cloning, the recent technological advancements that have allowed for cloning of animals (and potentially humans) have been highly controversial. Some believe it is unethical to use a human clone to save the life of another. Others have countered that people who exist today and have interpersonal relationships and personal histories should take precedence over never-conscious life at any stage of developmental maturity. The Catholic Church and many religious organizations oppose all forms of cloning, on the grounds that life begins at conception. Conversely, Judaism does not equate life with conception and, though some question the wisdom of cloning, Orthodox rabbis generally find no firm reason in Jewish law and ethics to object to cloning. From the standpoint of classical liberalism, concerns also exist regarding the protection of the identity of the individual and the right to protect one's genetic identity.

We have to wonder why cloning a human being is illegal but creating a designer baby is not!

I think that it's immoral and should not be allowed!

JerryB says:

I havn't really made up my mind about the morality of designer babies, but why is it any different than cloning? It seems to me that it is just a way of getting around the "no cloning" laws.

It's a good idea! I like the idea of being able to order good traits in my child!

Designer Baby On Wikipedia

The colloquial term "designer baby" refers to a baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering combined with in vitro fertilisation to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes or characteristics.Designer Babies: Ethical Considerations - Nicholas Agar - An ActionBioscience.org original article The term is derived by comparison with "designer clothing". It implies the ultimate commodification of children and is therefore usually used pejoratively to signal opposition to such use of reprogenetics.
