French fashion designers on stamps

Each year, for Valentine day, La Poste (the french postal service) issue a different fashion designer stamps set.
These stamps are heart shaped and comes in various denomination as well as souvenir sheets.
These are marvellous tiny pieces of art, and can make a cheap affordable collection.

Unusual and beautiful Valentine gifts!

Yves Saint-Laurent stamps

The first ever "designer heart" was issued in 2000.
The design was by Yves Saint-Laurent.
2 different stamps were issued: snakes and face (pictured).
These were also available in booklet of 10 self- adhesive stamps, and a souvenir sheet (pictured)
Frankly, the ugliest issue in my opinion.

Christian Lacroix designer hearts

In 2001 it's up to Christian Lacroix to design the valentine heart stamps set.
One stamp and a souvenir sheet were issued. The souvenir sheet is beautiful. A much better set than 2000.

2002

Unfortunatly, 2002 is a designer-less year. The valentine heart-shaped stamp was done by photograph Yann-Arthur Bertrand.

Torrente designer hearts

The designer's valentine stamps are back in 2003 with a set designed by the Torrente fashion house. The souvenir sheet is one of the nicer in my opinion.

Chanel stamps

2004 is a vintage year! Karl Lagerfeld designed the valentine set for Chanel. 2 stamps (eiffel tower, Chanel no5) and a souvenir sheet (Chanel no5).

Coco Chanel reference books

Beautiful reference books are available. Tracing the history of one of the greatest name in fashion.

Cacharel stamps

My favorite stamp right here. The 2005 0.82 euros designed by Cacharel. The souvenir sheet is also nice. These stamps were also available in a peel-and-stick form (pictured).

Did you know?

A "Cacharel" is a little bird from Camargue (a region in France)?

Jean-Louis Scherrer valentine stamps

2006. Issued in souvenir sheet, 2 stamps and 2 peel-and-stick stamps.

Givenchy stamps

Last year was Givenchy's turn to design the Valentine stamps. Not the best set. I was a bit let down as I was expecting something more original.

Just in!! The new 2008 France stamps!

This year issues are just out! 2 stamps (as well as stick-and-peel version) and a souvenir sheet.
Franck Sorbier is the designer. I had to look him up, I had no idea who he was. You can check out is latest collection on his web site: http://www.francksorbier.com/

How much can I expect to pay for a collection like this?

You will not ruin yourself! The souvenir sheets are at the most 10$ a piece. Don't pay more than that per piece!! The regular stamps runs between +- 2-3$ a piece. The peel-and-stick version are a bit harder to find and can run up to 6-8$ (then again, don't pay more than that).

Anything else I can add to this stamp collection?

Yes there is.

All the stamps shown here also come on what is called FDC's (First Day Cover). It is a printed enveloppe franked with stamps or souvenir sheet and bearing a special cancel. Some of these FDC's are issued by the post office, some others are issued for stamp shows.

For the cover you can expect to pay anywhere from 10$ to 30$, even more if there is a bidding war. As I said they are rarely offered for sale. If you see one, you grab it, don't wait and "think about it".
I lost a very nice cover that way once!

Here's a few from my collection:

These are much harder to get and more expensive than the stamps and souvenir sheet. I have seen very few around. They are not often offered on ebay because they are scarce, but they are not rare enough to be sold at the big auction houses.

I never knew about these stamps - I love them! Thank you for creating this lens. I can't afford most of these designers' clothes, but I can definitely handle the price of stamps....
