Can't Open Attachments in OWA with Exchange 2007 IE7
We've all come across those problems that just seem to be a freak of technology. Out of the ordinary strays a computer desktop or server running an application that's the same application that's running on many other computers in the same office or computing environment. All other computers with the same operating system, the same software applications, and the nearly identical everything else work fine but then there's that one or few that have a problem that's just out of the ordinary.
I recently had a customer that I installed an Exchange 2007 server for on a windows 2003 64 bit platform. Outlook and OWA were working fine for all computers but there was one, the manager of the company, whose outlook web access could not open attachments. He was unable to open attachments in OWA Exchange 2007 IE7. the user couldn't open nor save the attached documents no matter what type of documents they were.
The error message they received when trying to open or view attachments in OWA was something of the following:
"Internet Explorer cannot download {filename} from {site name or ip address}. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."
This error occurred when they tried opening attachments in OWA when SSL was enabled (https). Although other users had no problem they were not using IE7 with XP. I tried to reproduce the problem with IE7 on Vista. Although I got an error message when trying to open an attachment for viewing using Outlook Web Access on Exchange 2007, it differed because I was using Vista with IE7. This problem with OWA and opening attachments doesn't happen with IE6.
The solution is simple. Change the Security setting in the Advanced tab for IE7. Uncheck the box next to the line that says "do not save encrypted files to disk". From the menu choose Tools then click Internet options then click on the advanced tab. Scroll down to the security section and uncheck the box - that's it.
