Metal Detectors and Metal Detecting

Update: August 19th, 2011...ok, so I've had my Garrett 250 metal detector a couple days now and let me tell you, the learning curve is more than I expected...I've read the manual, watched the DVD and figured it was going to be "beep beep dig"...WRONG!
I had to email my supplier for something else and when I told him the readings in my back yard showed silver dollars everywhere he taught me a little something about the beeps / signals...

"Good signals sound the same in both directions of the swing. So if you go over a target and you get a sound in one direction but in the return path it sounds different in any way...it is trash !!! Good signals will sound the exact both directions of the swing, this is key. If you get a good sounding two way target as you swing over the sound, if the meter is jumping all over the place it is trash... if the meter locks on or flickers a bit DIG !!"

So now that I know a bit more...I tried it out again (in my back yard...they say to practice at a sandy playground or your back yard for a while first) and keeping in mind the above advice...I found metal! Keep yer panties on...it's just part of my chain link fence, a piece of tinfoil and a screw...BUT, the important thing is I am learning how to use my Garrett ACE 250 and I do highly recommend this machine for the beginner (even with the learning curve)...I researched detectors for a full day before making my purchase and when comparing features, the Garrett 250 just kept coming up as having more bang for the buck. Once you get used to reading the screen too (the screen is very helpful for a beginner...very detailed!) The coil is even water proof! So this means I can take it to the beach!
