Detroit Red Wings will win it all again this year

Are The Detroit Red Wings Set to Take Back The Stanley Cup?

In 2007-08 I predicted the Detroit Red Wings would take Lord Stanley's Mug early in the NHL season and Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Datsyuk and the the boys proved me to be the prognosticator of prognosticators, seer of seers... okay it was an easy guess. The next season I thought I was just as sure that they would repeat and it looked good up until the mighty Penguins came back to win it all. Then last season my faith waivered a bit and the Red Wings had a fair run in the playoffs, but again fell short. What does the 2010-11 season have in store for Detroit?

Who do you think will take the Cup this year? Those pesky Penguinos again? They look redhot right now and Sidney Crosby has been on fire, but they are being followed close behind by the equally good Philadelphia Flyers, behind their young goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Then there's the Chicago Blackhawks who have turned their franchise around in 2 short years from an also-ran to a powerhouse taking the Cup last year. The Leafs should be looking at the 'Hawks as an example of how to build a team (while they're playing golf in May).

The Red Wings? About a third of the way into the NHL season Detroit is number in the Western Conference, 5 points up on their division rival Chicago Black Hawks and have 3 games in hand.

The Detroit Red Wings have one of the most decorated histories in professional sports, having kept their fans on the edges of their seats for 80-plus years.

Whether they were claiming Stanley Cups or rebuilding for their next big run, the Wings have always managed to keep things interesting and entertaining both on and off the ice.

If you're a die-hard fan trying to test your knowledge or a casual observer looking to infiltrate Hockeytown, USA, Red Wings Essential has everything you'll ever want to know about this star-studded franchise.

Make a prediction!

Hey, if even the Head Squid Seth Godin can make a prediction so can you! Tell me who YOU think will win the Stanley Cup this year.

Red Wings sweep the Columbus Blue Jackets in Round One of the 2008-09 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Bradshaw predicts:

The Detroit Red Wings are rounding into shape as the post-season looms and have taken over the league lead. Anything can happen in the playoffs, but I think that Detroit will be EXTREMELY hard to beat when the NHL's 2nd season starts - in just about 2 weeks from today!

KimberlyDawnWells predicts:

Darn right they will!

Bradshaw predicts:

Seth, in most things I will gladly differ to you, but in this case, dude you are way off. I can't see the Sabres getting past Ottawa, Montreal or a rejuvenated Boston Bruins. The Red Wings will prevail when Bettman hands out the Cup in 2009.

sethgodin predicts:

No way. Buffalo Sabres in 6 games.

RichardMillington predicts:

I agree, The Red Wings look pretty strong. So it wouldn't surprise me if they win it this year.

The Best Goals of the 2007-08 Hockey Season

Check out these clips showing the best goals of last year.

Nicklas Lidstrom

Defenseman and Team Captain

Nicklas Lidstrom is the Captain of the Detroit Red Wings. An offensive defenseman, Lidstrom puts up almost a point a game while patroling the Red Wing's blue line. Noted as the first Swedish-born NHL Captain to raise the Stanley Cup last year, Lidstrom could score his 1,000th point this year as he enters the 2008-09 season with 938 regular season points.

2007-2008 10 goals, 60 assists for 70 points in 76 games
playoffs 3 goals, 10 assists for 13 points in 22 playoff games

Henrik Zetterberg

Left Wing and Alternate Captain

Zetterberg comes off a great season last year having scored a career high 43 goals with expectations that he may become a 50-goal man this year. Zetterberg won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the 2007-08 playoff MVP. Now entering his fifth season with the Red Wings, Zetterberg was a member of Sweden's 2006 Gold Medal team.

2007-2008 43 goals, 49 assists for 92 points in 75 games.
Last year's playoffs 13 goals, 14 assists for 27 points in 22 playoff games.

Pavel Datsyuk

Center

In 2007-08, Datsyuk led the Red Wings in scoring last year, joining hockey legends Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay and Steve Yzerman as the only players to have led the franchise in scoring for 3 consecutive years. Datsyuk also led the NHL overall in plus/minus with plus 41. He also was the winner last year of the Lady Byng (3rd year in a row), the Frank J. Selke trophies, and also named to the NHL All-Star game.

2007-2008 31 goals, 66 assists for 97 points in 82 games
Playoffs 10 goals, 13 assists for 23 points in 22 games

Playoffs 19 games 14 wins, 4 losses, 30 goals against, 1.55 gaa, 3 shutouts

Chris Osgood Videos

Here's Osgood making some saves, being interviewed by teammate McCarty, and scoring a goal. What, you didn't know Osgood scored an NHL goal? I think he is the current leader among active NHL goalies in the career goalscoring category.

Hockeytown doesn't stand still and re-tools lineup

Off-Season Moves

The Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings were busy this summer in the free agency market, picking up Marion Hossa and re-signing promising young Valtteri Filppula to a 5 year deal.

Rugged defenseman Brad Stuart played a huge part of the Red Wings playoff run and now has a new 4 year contract.

Detroit also picked up veteran goalie Ty Conklin for a one year stint after he played 33 games with the Penguins last year.

They also locked up defenseman Jonathan Ericsson & goalie Jimmy Howard to three year extensions.

The Captain: Steve Yzerman: 22 Seasons, 3 Cups, 1 Team

The Biography of Steve Yzerman

The Captain:
Steve Yzerman:
22 Seasons, 3 Cups, 1 Team

The tagline to this book says it all..."22 seasons, 3 cups, one team."

That's something few athletes can match. With today's free agency and multi-million dollar salaries, Steve Yzerman was unique ...a superstar athlete who started and ended his career with one team.

This book follows Yzerman's career, season through season. You'll see Yzerman emerging as a leader of the Detroit Red Wings as they battle (and lose) early playoff rounds and finally overcome injuries and disappointment to win their first Stanley Cup in decades in 1997.

Red Wing's Larry Aurie's Number 6 Was Retired Years Ago. Why No Love From Current Owners?

Terry Sawchuk's Number 1. Ted Lindsay's Number 7. Gordie Howe's Number 9. Alex Delvecchio's Number 10. Sid Abel's Number 12. Steve Yzerman's Number 19. All hang from the rafters of Joe Louis Arena. Why is Larry Aurie's Number 6 not among them?

Aurie played right wing for the Red Wings from 1927 until 1939. When he retired, then Wings owner, James Norris officially retired Aurie's number 6. As it was not the custom at the time, the right winger's number 6 was not hung in the rafters. Now current team owner, Mike Ilitch began hanging the retired jersey numbers of Red Wings past in the rafters, but continually snubbed Larry Aurie's memory. And still does. Take a look at this article about Larry Aurie Number 6 to read more about this Forgotton Wing.
