'84 was great, but just wait to see the results in '08: a journey with the Detroit Tigers Baseball Club

Ranked #18,292 in Sports & Recreation, #438,792 overall

< Lakeland, Florida > Every February ... The Detroit Tigers come to town.

2007 is history. 2006 made history. And 1984 is totally Tigers' history. It's time to think abotu 2008. It's time to think about a return to great in '08.

HISTORY — Everything began to all come together on March 27, 1984 -- the day that John B. Wockenfuss and young future star outfielder Glenn Wilson were shipped to the Philadelphia Phillies. Willie Hernandez and Dave Bergman rode in to town and that fateful March day, Hernandez told Sparky Anderson, "Give me the ball."

The season was incredible, but we knew, YEAH WE KNEW, that 1984 would restore the roar to Detroit Tigers baseball.

Nineteen-eighty-four is a memory created long ago and far away these days.

RECENT HISTORY — This exciting lens will shed new light on the 1984 season and (as luck would have it) the 2006 season. Gone are some of the longtime links between '84 and today, but the Old English "D" still shines brightly in many fans' teary eyes. Go, Tigers, go ...

For anyone who enjoys listening to the Tigers on the radio and remembers Mr. Ernie Harwell's wonderful, soothing voice ... "We'll be right back with Tigers baseball right after this ..."

It was a great year ...

Sparky promised a title in five years ...

When Larry Herndon caught that little pop up to short left field, an incredible season was complete. "Bless You Boys, Detroit Tigers 1984" blared from radios throughout the summer. It became a slogan, a song, a movement! The Tigers led wire-to-wire, and many of us knew after the Tigers heart-breaking second-place finish in 1983 that it was just a matter of time. What a GREAT YEAR!

Detroit News
The paper that covers the Tigers about as good as anybody out there. I know a 12-year-old kid who collected every single issue of the newspaper back in '84. And he still has many of the articles to prove it!
Detroit Free Press
Another great Michigan paper. These guys do okay with Tigers coverage ... but in '84 Joe Falls was writing for the News.
The Sporting News
The Sporting News kept that same 12-year-old kid entertained for many, many years before the Internet came around and did for sports coverage what CNN did for news coverage. Despite their "weird" era during the late 80s/early 90s, this is a classic newspaper weekly.

They played their game right here

Ernie called it THE CORNER

The parking was terrible, the place was littered all along the outside, it was scary if you had never been there before ... But, once you got inside that old brick and mortar monster, and saw the bright green grass for the first time, smelled those fresh, sweaty hot dogs ... there was no other way to describe Tiger Stadium. It was like home away from home.

Bottom of the Ninth

A great book. The photo at the right was taken during the 1995 season about two weeks before Gibby retired in the middle of the season. It was a surprising move, but he admitted that the timing was right. He commented that he came into the game with a strike out and he was going to go out with a strike out. What a clutch ballplayer he could be, though!
