"Tropical Feathers"

Giclee Prints

This gouache (opaque watercolor) painting was printed from an original work of art. The beautiful tropical birds are seen chattering and being curious about what's going on around them. This realistic print is colorful and very detailed. Among the tropical birds in this painting are parakeets, lovebirds, parrots, toucans and a macaw.

Amazon Kindle Store

You'll love reading from a Kindle!

I recently got a Kindle and I love it. Its very easy to use and the e-books download within seconds (and they are less expensive than regular books). Even though I will never give up my paper books, I like having the option of an electronic book/magazine reading device such as Kindle.

Dee Van Houten

Artist Bio / Statement

Dee Van Houten states in her artist bio that she loves animals and the spiritual side of nature which compels her to create art that reflects this. Her paintings of whimsical animals range from tropical birds and fish to elephants and zebras.

My love of animals and the quiet, spiritual side of nature are reasons why I feel compelled to paint or illustrate these beautiful subjects. Motifs that recur often in my art work are those of colorful tropical birds, tropical fish, exotic wildlife and puffin sea birds.

I enjoy capturing the whimsical nature and free spirit of my animal subjects and in no way intend to paint every feather or piece of fur. Instead, I create my own personal interpretation of what I see and feel through imagination, color, expression and placement of the subject throughout my art work.

Style

Exotic birds, tropical fish, sensual floral's, and the elegant female form are subjects that find their way into my imagination and finally into my art work. I capture my subjects with graceful fluid lines, unifying decoration and aesthetics. My artistic expression blends curvilinear stylization with traditional realism.

My art work is characterized by visually appealing themes that create a sense of fascination and intrigue. The design process is established by my particular use of interesting shapes, spatial relationships, color placement and unusual perspectives. In a lot of my art, I paint parts of my subjects floating outside of the picture plane, which I feel, gives the painting more movement and flow.

Techniques developed over the years have led me to become versatile in my use of mediums. Though I paint primarily in watercolor and gouache (opaque watercolor), other mediums I use include oil, pen & ink, colored pencil and graphite.

I constantly challenge myself to promote artistic growth and to keep my ideas fresh and interesting. The painting process is so personally rewarding, as it allows me to imaginatively interweave fantasy and reality throughout the design as I strive to visually translate a small part of nature's perfection.

"From The Neck Up"

Flamingo Giclee Prints

This flamingo color pencil drawing is one of my favorite pieces. There are many layers of color pencil that make up each flamingo, and its very crisp in detail. Anyone who is interested in birds, especially the graceful flamingo, will love this fine art giclee print.

Lovebirds

Lovebirds Giclee Prints

Dee Van Houten created this lovebirds painting in gouache (opaque watercolor). The curious lovebirds are all poking their heads up to see what's going on around them. This delightful painting is colorful and detailed. Available as giclee prints.

"Puffin Talk"

Puffin Giclee Prints

This whimsical puffin gouache (opaque watercolor) giclee print shows three puffins intently listening to one of their friends who appears to be chattering away. You will be able to see the incredible details in the faces of the puffins in this engaging and whimsical animal art painting. These are some of my favorite birds to paint because of the fun feeling they always convey.

The border surrounding the puffins is filled with swirling, twirling branch-like images that seem to be dancing around these adorable birds. If you know someone who loves puffins, they will surely love this delightful giclee print! You will be able to see the incredible details in the faces of the puffins in this engaging piece of art.

"Noah's Ark"

Noah's Ark Giclee Prints

This fanciful Noah's Ark giclee print features playful animals in pairs afloat in the 'sea' of the Mardi Gras parade. The delightful, whimsical and playful pairs of animals are all joining in the Mardi Gras celebration in some way; by throwing or wearing beads, playing music and even dancing among the different shapes of confetti floating through the air.

Two dressed up penguins are standing on either end of the ark, throwing beads off into the sea. One of the toucans, wearing a party hat, sits steadily on top of the Bourbon Street lamp post while one of the elephants holds the post up with his trunk. Also joining in this upbeat Mardi Gras celebration are mice, raccoons, ladybugs, and puffins. There are tropical fish playfully throwing beads over to the starfish who are dancing on top of the water surrounding the ark. Two sea-horses are gently sitting atop the billowy waves, also wearing fancy beads.

The ark itself, resembles a Dutch-like design with beautiful flowers painted all across its body. Two lovely butterflies are flying around the ark amid pieces of colorful confetti floating through the sky. You will see two Westie dogs poking their inquisitive heads out through the portholes. This delightful painting would look great in a kids room or anywhere you want a colorful, fun and uplifting feeling.
