Dexter Morgan. Blood splatter specialist by day, serial killer at night.

Debra Morgan. Dexter's foster sister. Has been known to defend her brother's strangeness.

Rita Bennett. Dexter's girlfriend and, later, wife. Killed by the Trinity Killer at the end of Season 4.

Maria LaGuerta. In charge of the Homicide department, Maria is one tough woman. She flirted with Dexter in the first season but possibly found his coolness off-putting, so she quit.

Angel Batista A detective. Good natured and honest, he gets himself into and out of trouble with women and is even briefly married.

James Doakes is another detective with killer instincts and sees through Dexter's mask of normality.

Vince Masuka. The lead forensics investigator. Portrayed as obsessed with sex to the point where he propositions any woman he meets. Occasionally shows poor judgment, such as kidnapping Dexter to take him to his bachelor party (and getting punched in the eye for his trouble).

Joseph Quinn A detective in the Homicide division with a mysterious past. Begins investigating Dexter during Season 5 but quits due to romantic feelings for Debra. Dexter repays him by removing a potentially damning bloodstain on his shoe.

Harry Morgan A cop and Dexter's adoptive father. Frustrated by the number of criminals on the street, he trains Dexter to channel his killer instincts to only hunt people who deserve it. Later commits suicide out of guilty feelings over what he had unleashed.
