Dexter - Why I Love This TV Show?

Ranked #6,932 in Entertainment, #85,531 overall

What I Love About Dexter (Part 1.)

When I first heard about Dexter I wasn't so sure. A tv series about an enigmatic serial killer - oh yeah that's just what we need. In a world crammed full of nutcases, sociopaths and murderers do we really want to see a serial killer painted in a good light on our screens? In a world where people get stabbed for looking at someone the wrong way, where old ladies get hit over their heads for their pensions and where idiots rampage through the streets of London looting, setting upon kind souls who try to intervene and burning down people's homes do we need to see a 'good' mass murderer flickering in the corner of our rooms? Initially I thought not. I was wrong, very wrong. Find out why lower down this page in part 2.

What I Love About Dexter (Part 2.)

There is a shortage of real justice out there today. We are forever hearing about some lowlife who's commited a heinous crime being given 'community service' or a woefully short sentence. Dexter readdresses the balance. He doesn't kill 'good' people. Well, not usually (he did make one mistake with that photographer, and also the guy he killed just because he was upset following Rita's murder.) The guy following Rita's murder was quite clearly pretty unsavoury but didn't deserve to die. Ok, so he's slipped from Harry's Code a couple of times, but we all make mistakes :-) On the whole Dexter goes after other serial killers and people who have got away with murder because of some technicality or because they know how to play the system. He kind of does what we would all like to do - make the bad guy pay. Read Part 3 lower down this page.

What I Love About Dexter (Part 3.)

Dexter Playing Happy Families. On a personal level I can identify with some aspects of Dexter's character. I don't have any overwhelming urges to kill people but I like the way he is solitary and finds it difficult to react as expected in a given situation. I do make the right noises at the right time but more from a sense of duty than there being real feeling there. The fact that I'm a trained actor helps with this! :-) Life can be pretty rubbish and eventually every single one of us WILL die. The things that people get excited about I find it very hard to understand and empathise with. Great injustices - I get that. Natural disasters - I get that. Random killing sprees by nutters - I get that. Kate Middleton is wearing a peculiar dress - WHAT??? I DON'T get that. Dexter deals with REAL (ok maybe not real, but let's say BIG) problems and dilemmas, not some celebrity driven drivel. More in Part 4 (lower down this page.)

What I Love About Dexter (Part 4.)

A Doting Daddy.Dexter's character is actually quite moral. Apart from to save his skin he doesn't lie, he doesn't steal and he treats people with respect and even kindness. Putting the serial killer aspect to one side I would go so far as to say that he is a great role-model for youngsters today. Only be horrible to horrible people would seem to be his motto and I concur with this absolutely. I've watched him develop from season to season and he's actually quite a fun guy. Oh of course he's socially inept and can't dance to save his life but I think I would like to know him. He genuinely cares about Debs and Harrison as well as the people around him, unlike so many, he has heart. Part 5 can be found lower down this page.

What I Love About Dexter (Part 5.)

Dexter may not be The Boy Next Door but he's someone I'm like to live next door to. Michael C Hall's portrayl is exactly on the mark. He can be sweet, kind, dipsy, brutal and generous, all in the same episode. I wasn't that taken with the acting skills of Jennifer Carpenter when the show started but I think she's developed artistically and now I actually enjoy her performance. The rest of the cast put in good to excellent performances. My favourite season so far has to be 4, with the amazing John Lithgow as Trinity. It really was 'edge of the seat stuff'. I get so excited each time Dexter returns and I read recently that there will be at least 2 more seasons - hurrah!. So, what do I love about Dexter? The character and all his flaws, the actors, the concept and most of the storylines. Dexter is the perfect anti hero for the 21st century and long may he wield his knife. Dexter (if you hadn't already guessed) is my hero. :-)

It seems like everyone Dexter gets close to ends up dead... a nice chap, but also a jinx! Love the show. Nice page!

Very true. Let's hope that after recent 'developments', (I don't want to reveal any spoilers here for people not in the US) a certain person survives beond the next season. :-)

You almost have me convinced, but the whole killing thing sort of ruins it for me, even though he is a modern day avenger.
