Meet Dharma

Dharma was my first dog to have when I moved out on my own. She was born in May of 1997, and I rescued her from the Springfield, MA MSPCA when she was 4 months old. Her name was Butterscotch in the shelter, but we were just getting into the yoga way of life and renamed her Dharma - Hindi for "that which sustains the universe." Our sweet Dharma lived a full 14.5 years. She had a bum knee, she was going blind, she was almost totally deaf, and she was covered in all sorts of benign lumps. But she was still happy until the end and we still loved her.

Dharma the Old Lady

Dharma the Stafforshire Terrier

Dharma is part American Staffordshire Terrier (see Difference between APBTs and AmStaffs) and part lab. It's a terrific mix. The AmStaffs are often referred to as "nanny dogs" because they are excellent with children. And Dharma just loves kids.

Dharma the Food Hog

Only the Best Food for Dharma

I figure it's a lot cheaper to spend the money on the front end to maintain her health than shelling out mucho dinero to the vet. And it has seemed to have worked. At 13, she has her normal aging issues but nothing acute.

We also feed her lots of fresh fruits and veggies. She loves 'em! Broccoli stalks are her favorite, as well as melon rinds. Keep in mind Dangerous Foods Your Dog Should Avoid.

Dharma looks wonderful. I have two dogs, Marvin rescued from Katrina, and Chester, who looks a bit like a pitbull without the "jaw" - he's a boxer-husky mix. They are profiled here: http://www.squidoo.com/american-adoption
