Healing Arts of Tibet

Background: Founded by Lama Tsong Khapa in the 14th century, Gaden Monastery was one of Tibet's largets monastic universities. It was destroyed during the Communist invasion in 1959. The monastery has since been reestablished in Mundgod, India, through the hard work of the monks themselves, many of whom escaped from Tibet with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. The monastery currently houses about 3,000 monks.

The Gaden Shartse Charitable Hospital officially opened on February 1, 2007 with the intention to serve anyone in the region including monks, nuns, Tibetan and Indian lay people.

Though the Tibetans have been in India almost 50 years, the monastery and surrounding villages in the South still lack many basic amenities. The monastic community in particular is still dependent on donations from the international community to cover their minimal running costs and needs.

Due to the kindness of sponsors, a clinic building has already been constructed in Gaden Monastery but is currently empty. The clinic is in need of medicine, equipment, supplies, and professional doctors to provide proper medical support. Funds raised from this tour will go towards equipping the hospital and treating those in need.

They need funds for a laboratory facility, office supplies and equipment, an X-Ray machine, a generator, and salaries for doctors/dentist (3)
