Thrangu Rinpoche at A Glance

Kenchen Trangu Rinpoche is the ninth incarnation of the Kagyu school or lineage of which Sherap Gyaltsen was the first.  Trangu was born in 1933 in Kham, Tibet.  He was recognized as a Tulku at the age of 4.  He entered Thrangu Monestary at the age of seven and stayed until age 16, when he did a long retreat.  At 23 he received full ordination from the Karmapa.  When the communists invaded Rinpoche was 27 and he left Tibet for India.  At 35 he became a Geshe.  Then he became the Abbot of Rumtek Monestary in Sikkim.   He later built Tara Abbey in Kathmandu.  In October 1999 he consecrated the college at Sarnath, which accepts students from all the different traditions of Buddhism and is open to Western students as well.    Thrangu Rinpoche is a recognized master of Mahamudra meditation and has taught it in over twenty-five countries.  Recently, because of his knowledge of the dharma, he was appointed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to be the personal tutor for the recently escaped Seventeenth Karmapa.

Selected Thrangu Rinpoche Quote:

Question: Would you talk about nyams in relationship to non-conceptual wisdom?

Rinpoche: The sorts of temporary experiences or nyams in Tibetan are not faults, they are good qualities in the sense that they come about through experience in meditation. However, if one becomes attached to such experiences, then they lead to bondage and in that way they become faults. There are three types of temporary experiences: a temporary experience of happiness, a temporary experience of clarity and a temporary experience of non-conceptuality. As for the first, happiness, there is happiness in body and happiness in mind. As for clarity, it means feeling that one's meditation is going extremely well, becoming very bright and clear. As for non-conceptuality, it is the sense that the stream of conceptuality has been severed or cut and that thoughts have just stopped. The problem is that one becomes attached to such experiences and if one becomes attached to them, then the force of one's meditation decreases. So from that point of view, it is important to abandon attachment to temporary experiences.

Inspirational Dharma Story from Thrangu's Students

On the 19th of November 1997, I asked Thrangu Rinpoche for some spiritual advice. I explained to him how I was having great difficulty with my Ngondro practice and was hoping he might give me some special blessing or teaching to help clear away the obstructions I was encountering. He looked at me, smiled and softly said, "Yes, you need Rotin (row-tin)." I thought to myself, "Oh, my goodness! He is about to reveal some very special secret practice to clear away these obstacles. It must be very special because I have never even heard of this before. It must be for his very sincere students on and on, ad nauseum, did my ego go on with its soliloquy. Finally, I turned to Rinpoche and said, "Yes, Rotin! Now what exactly is Rotin, Rinpoche?" He smiled at me patiently and said, "In the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening." I said, somewhat disappointedly, "You mean routine?" "Yes!" he said softly, "Routine" Afterwards I realized that, though my ego had initially been disappointed by his answer, his practical common sense advice was exactly "the very special secret practice" my heart had been longing for.

2008 Retreats by Thrangu Rinpoche in Crestone, Colorado

Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche will once again be offering Buddhist teachings at a residential retreat in Crestone, Colorado near the site of the Vajra Vidya Retreat Center.  This will be the eighth Vajra Vidya retreat held in Colorado.

This coming summer 2008 Rinpoche will teach on a Mahamudra text written by the Thangtong Gyalpo who lived about 1361 to 1485 and left a strong teaching and practice legacy, particularly concerning the practice of deliberate action or behavior.  He was a mahasiddha of the Shangpa Kagyu lineage.  In conjunction with his dharma teaching, he constructed 58 iron bridges, established 118 ferries, 111 stupas, and a great number of temples and monasteries in Bhutan and India.  Because of his construction works, he is sometimes referred to as the king of the empty plain or the iron bridge builder and depicted with an iron chain.

Registration:

Space is limited for this retreat. The capacity of the teaching/shrine room at the White Eagle will limit the number of retreatants who may be accommodated at the 2008 Vajra Vidya retreat.  We anticipate that we may need to close registration for the retreat when our maximum registration is reached.

Your place at the retreat will be assured only after you have registered, paid retreat fees, and received a confirmation email

Please refer to www.rinpoche.com for further information concerning Rinpoche's activities.

New Book by Thrangu Rinpoche is History of Buddhism in India

In 1991 Thrangu Rinpoche accompanied a group of western Buddhist students to each of the four major pilgrimage sites from the life of the Buddha. This book contains the teachings Rinpoche gave to the group at each pilgrimage site, enabling readers to share this unique experience.

This book also includes Rinpoche's summary of the History of Buddhism in India based on Taranatha's famous history describing the 12 deeds of the Buddha's life, the subsequent Buddhist councils and universities which oversaw the development of the sutras, shastras, and tantras, and the emergence of the Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions of Buddhism.

Rinpoche's teachings are accessible to new students while at the same time offering new insights to advanced students. Finally, the teachings are supplemented by a 60 page description of Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India which includes over 20 photographs and several maps.

This is a newly released boon and does not yet appear on Amazon, but check when you read this because this could have changed. It is now available from Namo Buddha Publications at a 10% discount.

Some of My Other Buddhism Lenses

Bhutan Home of The Thunder Dragon

Visit Bhutan - Highly Recommended
King wants Gross National Happiness
Bhutan is a small Buddhist country in the Himalayas. It sits between China (Tibet) and Nepal. It is a very pristine, agricultural country with many beautiful places to visit including Taksang - the Tigers Nest.

I highly recommend going to this destination rather than to Tibet. Why? Because going to Tibet supports the Chinese who are the enemy of Tibetan people and of Tibetan Buddhism. So please DO NOT support the Chinese when you can go to this beautiful country which I would describe at a little like Tibet was in the late 1950s - really especially if you leave the capital city of Thimpu.
