Lama Surya Das Practices Rime

Picture is Rime letters in Tibetan

The Rimé Movement was designed to recognize the differences between traditions and appreciate them, while also establishing a dialogue which would create common ground. There are actually five major branches of Buddhism: Sakya, Gelugpa, Nyingma, Kagu, and Bonpo. The Rimé Movement was designed to recognize the differences between traditions and appreciate them, while also establishing a dialogue which would create common ground. It is considered important that variety be preserved, and therefore Rimé teachers are generally quite careful to emphasize differences in thought, giving students many options as to how to proceed in their spiritual training. instrumental in re-initiating dialogue between the sects. Rimé was, to some extent, the re-establishment of a rule or principle that had always been present in Tibetan Buddhism, but that had been de-emphasized or forgotten. That is: to ignorantly criticize other traditions was wrong, and that misunderstandings due to ignorance should be immediately alleviated. Lama Surya Das organized several weeklong International Buddhist Teachers Conferences with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India, and America.

Lama Surya Das will be leading a weekend event in Costa Mesa, CA (Jan 20-21, 2012). For more information, visit http://dzogchen.org/retreats/

"Meditation is a way of being aware. It is the happy marriage of doing and being. It lifts the fog of our ordinary lives to reveal what is hidden; it loosens the knot of self-centeredness and opens the heart; it moves us beyond mere concepts to allow for a direct experience of reality."

~Lama Surya Das

What is Dzogchen?

Dzogchen is the consummate practice of Tibetan Buddhism. Dzogchen is direct, immediate, essentailized, adaptable and profound: a pure awareness practice applicable to any circumstance and readily integrated into modern life. The word Dzogchen can be translated as the Natural Great Perfection, directly introduces us to your inner Buddha, the inherent freedom, purity and perfection of being which is our true nature.

Spring is the time the desert blooms. With the recent rains in California, this may be a spectacular natural event to coincide with the opportunity to receive teachings from and practice with a Dzogchen lineage master, Lama Surya Das.

Review by C James: For the beginner stepping on the Buddhist path for the first time, BUDDHA IS AS BUDDHA DOES describes that path in all its richness. For the activist, spritual or otherwise, it is a true resource that will guide its readers with wit, wisdom and a wealth of practical knowledge. Add to all that the fact that the book was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

"It is inevitably painful to deal with transition, change, suffering, death, and other losses. They are realities we would prefer to avoid, or minimize, but they are essentially part of life. We must face them with courage, grace, clarity and wisdom. Lama Surya Das teaches us how to do so in the spirit of enlightenment, great practical wisdom, humility and effective compassion. Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be is a further tribute to his masterful talents as a spiritual teacher."

Journey Into Buddhism Trilogy

I am still arriving back from this incredible journey. The 3 dvds let filmmaker John Bush reveal this epic journey over 4.5 hours while visiting the most amazing temples, villages, caves, mountains and rivers in so many different places in Asia. I was particularly moved by the Burma and Tibet segments as there is so much difficulty there, while the people are so beautiful and their cause is so just.

These are not the usual talking heads type documentaries but more intuitive, spontaneous and revealing. We follow the camera into rare and seldom seen places and hear the legends and spiritual significance of each place. I was particularly impressed by the music which seemed very well suited to each scene and added to the dramatic structure. David Hykes' harmonic chants are hypnotic. There is a huge amount of the local music that is extraordinary and which I have never heard before. Each dvd has two viewing choices - with a narrator and with just music and sound. I look forward to this one.

While I know something about Buddhism I was relieved that the films do not have any sectarian biases - you do not have to be a Buddhist to "get" what John Bush is offering here. He presents it all in an informed but universal way that is quite engaging. There is something noble in seeing the grandeur and simplicity of these Asian venues dedicated to nothing but the discovery of wisdom & compassion.

I had heard of Lama Surya Das, but don't know much about him. I've been enjoying a couple of the videos that you included here :-) I've heard Krishna Das once in concert and I have a couple of his music CDs -- very enjoyable and uplifting chanting! I'm tickled that the two of them are having their sessions together at a First United Methodist Church (I grew up Methodist, and have good feelings for them, although I don't go to church now), and I'm tickled that the fee is $108.
