17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje
Karmapa literally means embodiment of the activity of all buddhas. The Karmapa's purpose is to manifest wakefulness and unconditional compassion in a direct, accessible way.
Historically, there has been controversy about the famous Buddhist the Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje. In early 2000 he was able to escape from the Chinese and trek over the Himalayas to Dharmasala and freedom. This was a great victory for Tibetan Buddhism and was an embarrassment to the Chinese. The Karmapa is unique because he was officially recognized as a Living Buddha by the Chinese as well as by the Dalai Lama. Now at the end of HHDL's life the Chinese are trying to control all reincarnations by politically choosing them. This is not Tibetan Buddhist custom. The Karmapa has escaped because the Chinese were trying to control him. They would not allow him to go to the headquarters of his lineage in Rumtek, Sikim in order to have the Black Hat bestowed on him. The Karmapa is the head of the Black Hat sect of Buddhism which has more followers than any other sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Since he has been in Dharmasala the young Karmapa has been interacting regularly with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He has now lived in India for 8 years since he escaped from China on January 5, 2000.

First Visit Ever to the United States
I was fortunate enough to attend the teachings of this young Buddhist teacher on May 25th, 2008 in Boulder, CO. I was very moved and impressed with how centered and mature this young tulku is. He gave us all a great compliment by saying that he'd visualize us and remember our time together. He also said he plans to return to the US and hopes to spend a couple of months each year here.
Macky auditorium was sold-out for the two public talks as well as a private one just for sangha members. We received a message of priceless wisdom. His Holiness spoke of the interconnectedness between the environment we live in and the inner peace of our minds. Throughout the day into the evening the gentle yet powerfully penetrating influence of His Holiness' unchanging impeccable presence left an indelible impression on his audience.
Quote by the Karmapa also referred to as Gyalwa Karmapa
Ten minutes later Gyaltsap Rinpoche returned and spoke quietly to the tulkus and lamas near his seat; from them the news spread like a wave through the shrine hall and out into the courtyard. "The Karmapa has escaped to India!" Everyone was amazed and ecstatic; older Tibetans were in tears. Days of joyous celebration followed. Later, Gyaltsap Rinpoche recalled, "When I heard news of His Holiness's arrival, I thought I was dreaming. I couldn't believe it. When I understood it was true, I was overflowing with Happiness"
This joy was felt by the Karmapa's followers all over the world, and reporters flocked to Dharamsala to cover the story, waiting for hour after hour, camped outside Chonor House
where the Karmapa was staying in seclusion with Situ Rinpoche, who had arrived on the afternoon of the fifth. The Indian Government was uncertain about the reasons for the Karmapa's escape - Did he come of his own accord? Was he sent by the Chinese? Was he drawn in by Tibetans? - and sent intelligence officers to interview the Karmapa and those who escaped with him.

As head of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. His Holiness is regarded as a reincarnate lama, someone who, although enlightened, returns to human birth lifetime after lifetime to help others achieve enlightenment.
May 17, 2008 New York Karmapa Urges Action to Help China's Earthquake Victims
His Holiness Karmapa ended his afternoon teaching today by speaking again about compassion. His Holiness said that we need to share our love and affection with all countries in the world, and that there are many places in the world right now where people are experiencing horrific suffering. We need to extend ourselves to those who are suffering not only in our minds but practically as well. His Holiness mentioned the recent tragic cyclone in Myanmar (Burma) and the massive earthquake in China. Relief efforts in Myanmar, he said, may be complicated by the political situation there, according to reports -- but there is definitely very direct action that can be taken to help the earthquake victims in China. His Holiness urged everyone hearing his message to do whatever they can to help those stricken by the China earthquake. An Aspiration for the World
He wrote the following song which was translated by the Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche and Tyler Dewar:
World, we live and die on your lap.
On you we experience all our woes and joys.
You are our ancestral home of old.
Forever we cherish and adore you.
We wish to transform you into the pure realm of our dreams.
We wish to transform you into a land for all creatures,
Equal for all and free of prejudice.
We wish to transform you into a loving, waqrm, and gentle goddess.
our hope in you is so ever resolute.
So please be the ground on which we all may live
So all these wishes may come true.
Do not show us the dark side of your character,
Where nature's calamities reign.
In every section of our world's land
May there thrive a fertile field of peace and joy,
Rich with the leaves and fruits of happiness,
Filled with the many sweet scents of freedom.
May we fulfill our countless and boundless wishes.

I love this book and card deck! Of all the books I've read about crystals, this is the most comprehensive book I've seen! The card deck is great for readings! This book links crystals to the metaphysical and physical parts of human beings in a way that makes so much sense. Now I really understand why crystals affect us.
And the cards are great! Whenever I get a cold or feel down about something, I just get out the deck of cards and give myself a reading from the "Jewels of the Lotus." The reading is always right on track - I come away with insights into the situation and then I make progress by using what I learned.
This is a long overdue book and card deck - it is definitely on my gift list for my favorite people!

It's a crime that China wants to select the leaders of Tibetan Buddhism. It is just wrong in so many ways.
