More important Diabetes information: Nerve Damage is a complication you have to be concerned with.
Motor nerves help you coordinate your movements.
Sensory nerves help you sense things, such as touch.
Our nerves like those of touch, help us know when things are safe. We recognize that the bath water is too hot or cold. We understand to pull our hand away from the stove because it's hot. They recognize pain.
You also have nerves that work automatically. Your heart beats, your lungs breathe, and you don't have to think about it.
Here's how you can help avoid nerve damage:
keep your blood pressure under control, control your blood glucose levels, and avoid smoking and alcohol.
Diabetes and Retinopathy
Diabetes Information on Retinopathy
The part of your eye that helps you adjust to light is the retina. Not only do you have to watch for glaucoma and cataracts, but Retinopathy is something to get checked for regularly. Retinopathy is the most common eye problem with diabetics.
Things to be aware of: blurred vision, seeing spots, shadows or your peripheral (side to side) vision is limited.
You won't feel pain, like if you cut yourself. Retinopathy is silent. It can be occurring without your awareness, so it's important to get eye exams, because your doctor can look for differences in your retina.

Diabetes and Gum Infection
When your gums become infected it's called Periodontitis. When bacteria gets trapped in your gums, they become infected. With Diabetes, you're at an increased risk, so taking proper care of your teeth and gums is very important.
When the gums swell at the base of your teeth, it is usually due to a sticky residue called plaque. When it's not removed, your gums will redden and swell, and it can become infected. Next, the gum pulls away from the teeth, and bacteria can get trapped in these crevices. Proper dental care can help you have one less thing to worry about. Keep your gums and teeth clean, and you'll be ahead of the game.
