Diabetes and Trehalose
Diabetes is endemic in western society today and it is increasing all over the world where we see people switch to a diet rich in simple starch and carbohydrates. China, Nigeria, Kenya, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Europe, America, Canada are all reporting explosive growth in diabetes. We have to find an answer which changes habits and Trehalose may be a very convenient easily adoptable component of the solution.

What Makes Trehalose So Unique
In very simple terms Trehalose is only digested in the small intestine by the enzyme trehalase. That's important to know because it takes food several hours to get there and that delays the absorption of glucose into the blood stream hence avoiding glucose spikes and the resulting insulin spikes. The benefits to health are only just becoming apparent.

Trehalose and Blood Glucose Levels

Trehalose, which is composed of two glucose molecules, is metabolized in an identical manner as other disaccharides (sucrose, maltose and lactose). After ingestion, trehalose is enzymatically broken down in the small intestine into two glucose molecules, which are then absorbed into the body by an active transport mechanism. Glucose is then utilized in the natural metabolic processes of life. Now trehalose has been shown to be a suitable energy source when consumed before, during and after exercise. The properties of trehalose, which make it particularly suited for products are:
-does not promote excessive insulin release
-lower peak glucose and more sustained energy release
-empties quickly from the stomach
-low caries-promoting properties
-non laxative
Results in Lower blood glucose
'In glucose tolerance trials there is a lower blood glucose peak, and a more sustained release of energy compared with glucose'
The pattern of glucose release is different for Trehalose compared to glucose or maltose. In a number of studies, carried out with various concentration of trehalose ranging from 5-20% sugar, lower peak blood glucose is seen when compared to glucose and maltose in glucose tolerance tests.
In addition, the release of glucose has been shown to be sustained for a longer period when compared to either glucose or maltose.
The benefit of this more sustained release of energy may be in either physical performance or mental alertness.
Other Trehalose Resources
- alzheimers and trehalose
- Alzheimer's is an incurable, degenerative and terminal illness that is more common in the elderly but is also known in much younger people 20 years and upwards. It is typified by memory loss, confusion, short & long term memory issues, mood swings and other problems.
- Huntingtons
- This site is about educating and informing. Huntington's disease is a progressive, degenerative disease that causes certain nerve cells in your brain to waste away. As a result, you may experience uncontrolled movements, emotional disturbances and mental deterioration. Huntington's disease is an inherited disease.
- trehalose and teeth
Trehalose does not cause nearly so many problems for tooth enamel. So if you have children who love the sweet taste of sugar this might be a suitable and even beneficial alternative for you and them. It might even be a way for you as a parent to get your own back on your children without them even knowing.- trehalose-weight-loss

OK the word SUGAR normally means bad, unhealthy, stop eating it, too much in our diets but what I'm about to show you is that there is a sugar (not a chemical or artificial sweetener) that is not only good for you but tastes and looks just like table sugar. In fact we've swapped it in homes for table sugar and no one has even noticed.

- My grandpa died of heart failure a year ago. He was diabetic and already sick but he was taking that drug Avandia, that I'm pretty sure played a role in his heart's deterioration.
