The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bible : A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating (Paperback)

Good nutrition is one of the most important tools a diabetic can have in his or her diabetic care tool kit.

Whether you are counting calories, counting carbohydrates, using food exchanges, or tweeking your current diet, utilizing a food list will help you stay on track.

All diabetics should review their personal food plan with a diabetic nutritionist or educator to make sure they understand what they can and cannot eat.

Having your own personal plan will take into consideration your height, weight, current blood sugar level, blood pressure, cholesterol, food allergies or addictions, and any other health risk you may have.

The best diabetes diet will follow the pyramid recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Diabetes Risk Factors

Blood Sugar 101:
What They Don't Tell You About Diabetes

Although researchers don't know exactly what causes diabetes, they know the following risk factors can contribute to the disease:

+ Being overweight or obese
+ Being pre-diabetic
+ Being elderly
+ Physical inactivity
+ Having high blood pressure
+ Having high cholesterol
+ Having a family history of diabetes
+ Belonging to certain high-risk ethnic populations such as Aboriginal, African, Hispanic, Asian
+ Having a history of gestational diabetes

These are the risk factors for type 2 diabetes - keep them in mind. If you are at risk, see your health care provider as soon as possible.

"I bought this Medport case hoping it would be a good replacement with improved utility, even though it's made for type 1 supplies, and I'm type 2. It works great. It's well made, with compartments that easily accomodate my larger-size meter, test strips container, lancet device, lancet cartridges, alcohol wipes, cotton balls, and glucose log. It holds enough supplies for a couple of weeks. It's a good size; not too big, but big enough."

Diabetic Symptoms

In some cases they can be reversed!

Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes:
The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs

Anyone who has a history of diabetes in their family should stay alert for any signs or symptoms of the disease. The earlier a person is diagnosed, the easier it is to manage diabetes.

Although a diabetic may not have all of these symptoms, they may include:

+ Unusual thirst
+ Frequent urination
+ Weight gain or loss
+ Extreme fatigue or unusual lack of energy
+ Blurred vision
+ Frequent or recurring infections
+ Cuts and bruises that are slow to heal
+ Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
+ trouble getting or maintaining an erection

Rarely, a person can have diabetes without experiencing any symptoms. Regular check-ups will help prevent the onset of diabetes. If diabetes runs in your family, keep these diabetic symptoms in mind.

Rate Your Plate For a Healthy Meal

The American Diabetes Association offers an easy way for diabetics to know when they have a healthy meal in front of them. Called Rate Your Plate, the quick guide to portion control divides your plate into three sections.

Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Diabetes:
Nutrition You Can Live With

Draw an imaginary line down the center of your plate. Then draw another imaginary line dividing one section into two quarters.

Section 1 - Place grains or starches such as rice, pasta, potatoes or peas on one fourth of your plate.

Section 2 - Meat, fish, or poultry go on the other fourth.

Section 3 - You can fill the last half with non-starchy veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes. This is the part of your plate to get creative with salads.

Finally, add a glass of non-fat milk, a small roll, or a piece of fruit and you have a diabetic-friendly meal you can enjoy guilt free.
