Diabetic Summer Drinks

Smoothies wonderful shakes and more! A cool, refreshing summer; delicious and healthy. You can still have great taste while watching what you eat for calories, fats, and sugar. Being a new diabetic I am always searching for yummy treats to satisfy myself and my family, and these certainly do! When you consider these facts we should all be looking for alternatives, there are 23.6 million children and adults in the United States, 7.8% of the population, that have diabetes. Nearly 34 percent of American adults are obese, more than double the percentage 30 years ago. The share of obese children tripled during that same time, to 17 percent. In the United States there are more than 57 million people that are pre-diabetic.

We as adults, both those of us with diabetes and those without it, need to take care of ourselves and set an example for our children, protecting them from this awful disease that still has no cure. The best thing to do now is eat right and exercise. And remember to do your research and you can find some yummy delights that will satisfy your whole family. There is a treasure chest of delicious healthy ideas out there.

Diabetics And Alcohol

Diabetics must be very careful with alcohol intake, whether you are Type 1 or Type 2 or even just Pre-Diabetic please ask your doctor about alcohol before indulging. You can read about it at the diabetes web site and web MD, even the mildest level of only being on pills can be an issue.

Here are the minimum rules to follow, but ALWAYS check with your doctor first.
~ always have a full stomach
~ always test before drinking
~ bring test kit with you test after 1 drink

Most suggest making your own drinks using half the amount of alcohol and limit to 2 drinks.
Always have someone with you when drinking so that someone is there if you need help (even if you are at home) and warn them what could happen so that they will recognize the signs that you are drunk but are having a diabetic reaction.

They sell lots of sugar free drink mixes such as Baja Bob's Sugar Free Mixes, or use diet coke, or you can make a sugar free long island iced tea or whiskey sour,.or even sugar free lemonade with UV Vodka's Pink Lemonade.

Another idea is add half the amount alcohol you would normally use too a smoothie.

I can't stress strongly enough though the importance of safety. That is why this section is small. I had a friend he was 22 he had type 1, he had been dating a girl and she thought it best they didn't see each other awhile. Well he went home and drank a few beers to drown his sorrows. After 3 days of all of us begging the cops to break into his apartment because his car was there with no answer, they finally did. He had been dead for 3 days. He had a diabetic seizure, then fell into a coma, and then died. He died all alone and only 3 beers where missing from the six pack. So DON'T TAKE CHANCES!
