I have been suffering from diabetic neuropathy since 1999 and I have been doing extensive research ever since about this disease in order to find out what I should be doing to treat it. I have been sharing what I have found in a number of support groups I have started on the Internet and now that Squidoo is here I have decided to use it as another way to share the information I have gathered. I hope you will find the information you will find here useful. Please check regularly for updates.
About Diabetic Neuropathy or Peripheral Neuropathy
- Diabetic Neuropathy
- You wil find many sites on the Internet which talk about diabetic neuropathy but start with this one as it is very informative.
In the section "Preventing Diabetic Neuropathy" there is a link to the "Prevent Diabetes Problems" series. Click on the link and read each section of the series as here is a lot of excellent information. You may want to order this series if you prefer reading from booklets. - Diabetic Neuropathy
- This is a scientific article about diabetic neuropathy published on the e-medicine website. It covers a lot of material and it may be a bit difficult to understand by people not used to read scierntific material. Try reading it but take your time. You may get some of the answers you have been looking for.
- What is Peripheral Neuropathy?
- This ia a page from the Jack Miller Center for Peripheral Neuropathy of the University of Chicago. The center provides Education on the causes, symptoms and treatment of peripheral neuropathy, laboratory and clinical resources for continued studies on peripheral neuropathy, comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for people with peripheral neuropathy. You will find some information about DPN in the Types of PN section.
Treating Diabetic Neuropathy
- A Multidisciplinary Approach to Diabetic Neuropathy Treatment
- This is a nutritional approach to treating diabetes and diabetic neuropathy that has been followed with success by a member of the Diabetic Neuropathy Support Group I moderate (see link below). It may seem a bit complicated but it is not. Take the time to read it and if you are interested try one of the two programmes suggested.
Links to Support Groups Websites
- Diabetic Neuropathy Support Group
- This is a support group that i started on Yahoo! Groups several years ago and that has now moved to Big Tent. Follow the instructions to join.
- Calgary (Alberta ) Neuropathy Support Group
- If you live in or close to Calgary, Alberta, this is an excellent support group to join.
- Braintalk Forums
- This is a link to the Peripheral Neuropathy forum of the Braintalk forums on neurological conditions. There is no separate forum about diabetic neuropathy.
This is an excellent forum. I personnally do not visit it very often now that my neuropathy is pretty well under control but it has been very helpful in the past. It could be helpful for you also, specially if you have recently been diagnosed.
Associations
- The Neuropathy Association
- The Neuropathy Association is a public, charitable, nonprofit organization that was established in 1995 by people with neuropathy and their families or friends to help those who suffer from disorders that affect the peripheral nerves.
You can join the association at no cost. This will give you access to all parts of its website including a very active bulletin board.
Tests
- Blood Glucose Test
- A blood glucose test measures the amount of a type of sugar, called glucose, in your blood. Glucose comes from carbohydrate foods. Anyone suffering from diabetes must ensure that his/her blood sugar level stays within the normal range at all times. This is also very important for diabetics who also suffer from peripheral neuropathy.
- Convert Blood Sugar Level Readings
- In Canada and in Europe the metric system is used to measure the blood sugar level. As a lot of the litterature is American we must therefore know how to convert the levels to the American system or vice-versa. Use this converter to convert a typical United States measure of blood glucose (milligrams per deciliter, or mg/dL) to a measurement more common in European countries and countries using the metric system (millimoles per Liter, or mmol/L).
- A1C Test
- An A1C (also known as glycated hemoglobin or HbA1c) test gives you a picture of your average blood glucose control for the past 2 to 3 months. The results give you a good idea of how well your diabetes treatment plan is working.
