Diagonal Peyote BeadingTutorial

Diagonal Peyote Beading Stitch

Diagonal peyote is an interesting, versatile stitch that resembles St. Petersburg Chain. It can be worked into a necklace with a V in the center from which to hang a pendant as in the picture of the "Pink Lady" necklace, or can be formed into a cupped Russian Leaf as in picture of the "Russian Leaf " earrings.
The necklace in the picture is worked with Czech seed beads and embellished at regular intervals with size 8 seed beads. The earrings are worked with size 11 delicas. The only embellishment is a different color accent bead at the outer turns.

Working Diagonal Peyote Stitch

Part 1

Supplies you'll need:
Beading thread of your choice
Beading needle
Beads of your choice

To make the earrings, cut a piece of beading thread about 4 feet long. Put a stop bead at the center of the thread.
Diagonal peyote 1-5
Pick up one accent bead (A), seven main color beads (MC), 1 A, and one MC. Slide to the center of the thread. Pass through the fourth bead from the needle.

Peyote three MC and exit the first A picked up. Note: Keep tension taut throughout. Spaces are left between beads in the illustration for clarity.Do not remove the stop bead yet
.

Peyote three MC.

Pick up one A and one MC. Pass thread back through the last bead you picked up in step 3.

Peyote 2 MC. Your thread will be exiting the first MC in the previous row.

Part 2

Diagonal peyote 6 - finishPick up one MC, one A, one MC and pass back through the first MC in the opposite direction. Manipulate the beads so that they form an inverted triangle as shown and pull thread taut.

Peyote two MC, pick up one A and one MC.

Pass thread through the last MC you added in the previous row. Peyote two MC.

Repeat steps 6 through 8 two more times. You will have four A on the left (inside edge) and five A on the right (outside edge). Your thread will be coming out of a MC on the inside edge.

Lay this thread aside. Turn the work over, remove the stop bead and repeat steps 3 through 8 with the other thread to complete the other side.

Diagonal Peyote-Forming an Earring

Diagonal peyote earwire

Thread another needle onto the working thread you laid aside. Cross threads in one MC. Pull the threads taut. The leaf will cup.

Pick up three MC, the earwire and three MC on one thread and pass back through the bead the thread is coming out of. Pass the other thread through the seed beads and earwire in the opposite direction. Pull thread taut.

Pass each thread back into the leaf through the MC shown. Tie off and weave in tails.

To make a necklace, cut off a piece of beading thread twice the length you're comfortable with.
Work steps 1 through eight, then repeat steps 3 through 8 on each side until each side is half the
length you want your necklace. Add thread as needed. Add the clasp of your choice.

Happy Happy New Year!! I love having the instructions for this awesome beading pattern. The only thing I might do differently is to add the word "Bead" or "Beading" into your title to make it easier for search engines to find you, i.e. "Diagonal Peyote Beading Tutorial" . The only reason I found this lens was a link from another site. The intro photo of your work is awesome.
