A very loving tribute to your sister. I was on dialysis for 3 years before being fortunate enough to receive a transplant. It's true -- dialysis is definitely a major life change, even if you do relatively well on it. I tried peritoneal but it didn't remove enough toxins and I ended up hospitalized. I did ok on hemo but I live in an area where winter weather can be an issue and I always worried that there would be a storm and I wouldn't be able to get to the center. It is very stressful on family members (as Barb knows!). Maybe more so than on the patient, because everyone worries so much. Thank you for doing this much needed lens.

My father is now on peritoneal, he was on hemo for 4 mths & on peritoneal for 9 mths. He trained on the night cycler & had major panic attacks & could not do it. Just the thought of being confined (tied down as he called it) for 9 hrs., was not a good thing. I watched my mother deal with lung cancer for 13 mths, with chemo & radiation & it is not much worse if any than watching him deal with this. He was such an independent man, had his own business, rental property etc., then his world got turned upside down. Closed business, sold property, got depressed. He was hospitalized in Feb of 2008 with digoxin poisioning (thanks to digitalis heart medicine) & by Aug. all this happened. Guess I just needed to vent. Thanks for creating this site for us.

    Hi Cindy,
has your dad thought about doing CAPD (manual peritoneal exchanges throughout the day? I've been doing CAPD for 6 yrs and it's great. I'm not tied down to a machine, although I do have to make time for 4 exchanges during the day. It's worth a shot!!!

My mother has just been diagnosed with renal failure, and needless to say is feeling completely frightened. I am glad you have come up with this webpage to offer your ideas and links and support - so that we family members might gain knowledge on how to ease the suffering of those close to us with this issue. God Bless you and your sister.

Oh Barb, what a wonderful tribute to your sister! It brought tears to my eyes. Yet it's also encouraging to others who may face this, a great resources repository, and a warning about fad diets and vital water consumption. You constantly help people with your lenses, Barb. Thank you!

Great lense. I had an older brother who had to go through the trials of dialysis. He's been the motivation to improve the lives of my family (and anyone who will listen) through diet and exercise.

    My first attempt is here.

Have you seen Travis' lens on our son? http://www.squidoo.com/alport_syndrome/

My father was on both hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis. I probably won't even have to be on dialysis, but our son may. I am praying that when the time comes, he will be able to receive a transplant.
